FORT WAYNE — The Patriots finished behind the Starfires by five strokes in the South Adams Invitational last week.
Playing in their first nine-hole match of the season, that margin was reduced to just one.
The South Adams High School girls golf team edged the Patriots for second place on Monday in a three-team match with Heritage at McMillen Park Golf Course.
Heritage, South Adams (1-0, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) and Jay County (0-1, 0-1 ACAC) were all within two strokes of one another. The host Patriots totaled 206 as a team, with South Adams and Jay County behind with 207 and 208 respectively.
Carlie Wickey shot a career-best 49 to lead Jay County. Cassie Reno followed with a 51, which was also a new career-low.
Kendra Dodd was third on the team with a 56, with Sierra Caster and Madison Brown shooting identical scores of 58 to complete the Patriots’ team score.
Madalyn Garringer also competed for the Patriots, and she shot a 70 in her first varsity dual match.
South Adams scores were not provided.

ARCANUM, Ohio — The Fort Recovery High School boys golf team moved to 2-0 on the season Monday with a 186-209 victory over the Tri-Village Patriots at Beechwood Golf Course.
Calvin Rammel led the Indians (2-0) with a 44, and Harrison Kaup followed with a 46.
Austin Faller and Austin Pohl completed the Indians’ team score by shooting 47 and 49 respectively.
