Errors cost Patriot spikers

MUNCIE — For the second consecutive season against the Eagles, too many errors proved costly for the Patriots.
The Jay County High School volleyball team lost to the Class 3A No. 3 Delta Eagles in straight sets Thursday, 25-17, 25-14, 25-16.
It was the second match this season for the Patriots (0-2) against a ranked opponent after a four-set loss to Class 2A No. 4 Madison-Grant on Tuesday.
Senior Abby Barcus led the Patriots in three statistical categories, including kills (eight) and digs (10). She shared the team-high of three service points with classmate Katie Lyons and sophomore Kendal Garringer.
Britlyn Dues and Kaelyn Weaver tallied four and three kills respectively, while Chloe Trissel chipped in with eight digs and Kailee Denney tallied five.
Garringer recorded eight assists and Denney had seven.
The Patriots look to rebound from consecutive losses when they host the Jay County Invitational on Saturday. The tournament begins at 9 a.m.
Tennis shut out
OSSIAN — Jay County’s boys tennis team lost by a 5-0 margin to the host Norwell Knights on Thursday.
Junior Garrett Rodgers won the only game for the Patriots (0-2) in his 6-0, 6-1 defeat at No. 1 singles to Bryant Barger. Payton Heniser and Conner Benter lost their singles matches in straight sets as well, with Heniser falling 6-0, 6-0 to Trevor Wilson at No. 2 singles and Benter dropping his No. 3 singles match to Ian Gerber by the same score.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Luke Weaver and Kyler Hudson lost to Cody Shively and Dylan Felger 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Ben Muhlenkamp and Xavier Ninde fell to Andrew Mader and Tyler Skiles 6-0, 6-0.
Sheldon Upp played two junior varsity matches, losing to Tanner Johnson 8-0 and Ethan Bailey 8-2.
Soccer falls 4-1
MONROEVILLE — Three goals in the second half helped the host Heritage Patriots to a 4-1 victory over the Jay County High School boys soccer team Thursday.
The host Patriots took a 1-0 lead into halftime, and pushed the advantage to 3-0 midway though the second half.
JCHS senior Zach Chaney scored the first goal of the season for Jay County (0-2, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) when he found the back of the net on a penalty kick. With 14 minutes left in the contest Heritage scored again to push the score to 4-1.
Jay County returns to the pitch on Monday as it hosts the Woodlan Warriors at 6 p.m.
