OSSIAN — Zach Colpaert continues to dominate the sprints.
Colpaert won both freestyle sprints on Saturday, helping the South Adams High School boys swim team finish fourth in the Norwell Invitational.
Oak Hill won the eight-team meet with 352 points. Bluffton was the runner-up with 267.5, and host Norwell was third with 146. South Adams totaled 138 points, and Jay County totaled 88.5 points for seventh.
Colpaert won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.55 seconds, then followed it up with a victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.63 seconds.
South Adams’ 200 freestyle relay placed second, the 200 medley relay was third and its 400 freestyle relay finished eighth.
Zach Teeple was second and fourth respectively in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Neuenschwander placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
Placing in the top eight for Jay County were Christopher McDowell, Tayler Smeltzer and Garrett Campbell. McDowell was second and fourth respectively in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events while Campbell was seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Smeltzer placed eighth in the 100 butterfly.
The Patriots’ 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams were both sixth.
Tribe tankers win
MINSTER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys and girls swim teams both picked up a pair of wins Saturday at Auglaize-Mercer YMCA.
The Tribe girls knocked off Marion Local 53-39 and topped St. Marys 59-30. Fort Recovery’s boys defeated Marion Local 47-40 and St. Marys 44-35.
Harrison Kaup won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for the FRHS boys, who also got wins from Nolan Thobe (200 individual medley) and Owen Sheridan (100 butterfly).
For the Tribe girls, Sophie Timmerman, Alexis Bubp and Cassy Martin were each dual winners. Timmerman placed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Bubp handled the 200 IM and 100 freestyle and Martin won both the 50 and 500 freestyle events. Faith Hull also won the 100 butterfly.
Both the boys and girls teams won all three relays.
SA falls again
SELMA — The South Adams boys basketball team dropped a 68-54 contest to the host Wapahani Raiders on Saturday.
It was the second loss in as many games for the Starfires (3-2).
Wapahani (2-3) used a strong first quarter, getting out to a 22-16 lead after eight minutes. The Raiders slowly built on its advantage throughout the rest of the game, and was in front 39-26 heading into intermission. South Adams wasn’t able to cut into the deficit out of halftime, as it trailed 52-38 after three quarters.
Marcus Teeter had a team-high 19 points for South Adams, which also got 10 points from Jared Grabau. Kody Fike grabbed six rebounds, and Grabau had a game-high five assists for the Starfires, who shot 44 percent from the field and 43 percent from the free-throw line. Wapahani, meanwhile, made 15 of its 28 free-throw attempts.
South Adams’ junior varsity team won 56-54 in overtime. Joe Stuber led the way with 16 points, Lars In’t Groen tallied 14 and Grant Besser recorded 11.
ACAC teams named
The Jay County and South Adams football teams were well represented in the All-Allen County Athletic Conference football teams that were released Saturday.
South Adams (8-5), which won the program’s third sectional title in four years, had nine players earn the honor, while Jay County (6-4) had eight players named all-conference.
Jayden Dull and Cam Cook of SAHS earned first team All-ACAC honors as an offensive lineman and tight end respectively. Isaiah Baumgartner was a first-team defensive lineman and J.D. Groh was selected as a defensive back. Blade Zeitvogel was first-team punter.
Jay County juniors Cole Stigleman and Gaven Hare were given first-team nods as running back and offensive line, and Bryan Stancliffe was a first-team defensive back.
James Groh (offensive line), Joe Stuber (running back), Corbin Blomeke (defensive line), Andreas Martinez (kicker) and Zeitvogel (linebacker) earned second-team honors for South Adams.
Jay County’s Connor Davis (offensive line), Michael Schlechty (wide receiver), Brandt Pearson (defensive line), Ethan Theurer (linebacker) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (defensive back) were named to the second team.
