Fort girls rout Blackhawks

UNION CITY, Ohio — The Blackhawks trailed 5-3 midway through the opening quarter.
It’s the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team scored 34 straight points that spanned the first and second quarters Saturday in a 65-21 clubbing of host Mississinawa Valley.
The Indians (15-3), who finished 12th in the most recent Associated Press poll, scored the first five points of the game before the Blackhawks hit a 3-pointer. Then the Indians went on its lengthy run, holding the host team without a point for more than 11 minutes.
Fort Recovery led 21-3 after the first quarter and 39-6 at half. The Tribe’s advantage after three quarters was 57-15 and their biggest lead of the game was 50 points.
Tribe sophomore Grace Thien had a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. She also had five assists. Whitney Will followed with 16 points and Kendra Siefring tallied 13.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team moved to 6-11 with a 42-18 victory. Chloe Metzger led all players with 18 points, and Brooke Gaerke had 11 rebounds.

Tribe bounces back
UNION CITY, Ohio — The skid is over.
Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 62-53 victory over the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks.
The Indians (10-5) trailed 47-40 with 5:30 to play, but went on a 22-6 run, including the final 11 points, to close out the game.
Micaiah Cox was 10-for-13 from the field and made all four of his free throws to finish with a game-high 24 points. He also led the team with eight rebounds.
Matt Bihn added 15 points of the bench and Darien Sheffer chipped in with 12 points. Chase Bruns had nine points.
Ethan Bowman’s 20 points led the Blackhawks.
Ryan Braun and Cade Wendel combined to score 30 points as the FRHS junior varsity squad also won, 57-32.
Braun scored 18 points and Wendel added 12, doing most of his damage from the free-throw line. He was 8-for-10 from the stripe.

Miles second
INDIANAPOLIS — Courtney Miles edged teammate Halle Hill for second place in all around Saturday and Sunday for Mid-America Gymnastics at the Once Upon a Time gymnastics competition at Washington High School.
Competing in Level 8, Miles, a sophomore at Jay County High School, was first on the balance beam with an 8.9. She added third place finishes on the floor exercise (8.675), Vault (8.5) and uneven bars (8.05) for an all-around score of 34.125.
Hill, a West Jay Middle School eighth grader, was first on both the vault (9.175) and floor (9.0). Her 8.425 on beam was third, and she scored a 7.05 on bars for an all-around score of 33.65.
West Jay seventh grader Hannah Outcalt’s all around score of 33.325 was ninth in Level 4. She was fifth on beam (8.85) and seventh on floor (8.725).
