Patriots, Chiefs claim archery titles
Jay Co. first out of three teams, East Jay best of five
The archery teams of Jay County High School and East Jay Middle School shot their way to titles Saturday in an invitational at East Jay.
The Patriots scored 3,083 out of a possible 3,600 to win the three-team high school competition. They defeated Randolph Southern (2,990) and Lakeview Christian (2,872).
East Jay scored 3,053 points for the victory, finishing ahead of West Jay (3,006), Winchester Driver (2,863), Randolph Southern (2,678) and Lakeview Christian (2,626).
Jay County’s Dustin Bricker led the Patriots with a score of 276 to finish third overall in the high school division. He shot 10 a whopping 14 times, including a flawless third round.
Conner Benter had eight 10s on his way to a score of 269, and Trent Miller had nine 10s to finish with a 262 and round out the Patriots’ top three shooters.
Santina Hutchens and Chase McFarland of East Jay were the top two shooters overall in the middle school division. Like Bricker, Hutchens finished with 14 10s as she totaled 277 points. McFarland hit 10 eight times on his way to a total of 263. Kassidy Fennig finished with a score of 259, including seven 10s.
West Jay’s top three archers were Hunter Harrison, Makayla Templeton and Sarah Bowdell. Harrison was third overall with 263, but was behind McFarland because the East Jay shooter finished with more 10s. Harrison totaled five.
Templeton was second for the Eagles, hitting 10 four times on her way to a total of 262. She edged Bowdell (eight 10s) by one point.
