Jay County wrestlers rally to beat Spartans

FORT WAYNE — It’s been more than two weeks since the Patriots’ last match.
They picked up right where they left off.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team moved to 8-1 on the season Thursday with a 39-27 victory against the Homestead Spartans.
Levi Hummel and Jacob Ferguson both earned first-period pins for the Patriots. Hummel beat Hunter Damron in 1 minute, 26 seconds, at 170 pounds to start the match, and Ferguson pinned Isaiah Oakley in 49 seconds in the heavyweight match.
With the match tied at 24, wins by Colton Compton (138), Thomas Hemmelgarn (145), Tyler Leonhard (152) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (160) all won to give the Patriots the team victory. Compton, Leonhard and Ivan Hemmelgarn all won by decision, and Thomas Hemmelgarn earned a pin in the second period.
Also earning wins for Jay County were fourth-ranked Andy Kohler at 182, Lucas Schmit by forfeit at 220 and Davis Anderson at 113.
Star swimmers win
BERNE — The Starfire girls won every event and the boys were victorious in each race as the South Adams swim teams beat Coldwater on Thursday.
The boys won 140-28, and the girls earned a 128-48 victory.
Brette Klopp, Olivia Von Gunten and Ashton Klopp were each dual winners for the SAHS girls. Brette Klopp won both the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke races, and her twin sister Ashton earned victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Von Gunten was first in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
Korinna Schindler (diving), Ashley LeFever (100 freestyle) and Audrey Burson (100 breaststroke) also won their respective races.
Daniel Burson, David Steffen and Daniel Steffen each won a pair of events for the boys. Burson placed first in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. David Steffen picked up wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and Daniel Steffen earned victories in the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle.
Drew LeFever (100 butterfly) and Jesse Sutton (100 backstroke) also won.
Both boys and girls teams won all three relays as well.

BERNE — South Adams’ wrestling team had its senior night spoiled with a 39-30 loss to the Southern Wells Raiders.
Brandon Wynn (126 pounds) and Isaiah Baumgartner (220) both won their matches by pin. Tayler Cuellar won at heavyweight by a 13-2 major decision, and Wyatt Miller earned a 20-5 technical fall victory at 106 pounds.
Corbin Bomeke won by a 5-4 decision at 170 pounds, and Jordan Heckler earned a forfeit at 182.
