POINT OUTLOOK, Missouri — Kegan Comer and the Cougars made their second tournament game a little less suspenseful.
Comer, a 2013 Jay County High School graduate, and his top-ranked University of St. Francis men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead in the first 10 minutes Friday and remained in control throughout its 89-82 win over Mount Mercy in the second round of the NAIA Division II Tournament.
The victory sends the Cougars to the quarterfinal round, in which they will play No. 9 Keiser (30-4) of Florida at 2 p.m. today at College of the Ozarks’ Keeter Gymnasium in Point Outlook, Missouri.
Comer scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, in the first eight minutes Friday as part of an 18-point effort that tied him for the team high with Evan Henry. USF had rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat Dakota State in the opening round of the tournament.
“This game we had a little different mentality,” said Comer. “We knew if we came out quick and focused, it would be an entirely different game.”
Comer shot 4-of-6 from long distance and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line. He also had five rebounds, two steals and an assist.
