FORT RECOVERY — Caleb Martin will play football at the next level.
Martin, a junior at Fort Recovery High School, verbally committed Friday to play college football for the University of Toledo Rockets.
“It feels good, I figured it would take longer,” Martin, who led the Indians to the program’s first state championship this past season.
Martin made an official visit to Toledo on March 3, not expecting to get an offer. He spent the week talking with his family and his coach, Brent Niekamp, and came to a decision Thursday evening.
He announced his commitment on Twitter.
“All of their coaches made me feel like I was home,” Martin said of his visit. Brian Wright is the Rockets’ quarterbacks coach. “The players are great guys and they said that they love it up there.”
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 190-pound quarterback threw for a Division VII state championship record 385 yards and five touchdowns, guiding the eighth-ranked Indians (13-2) to a 35-14 victory over second-ranked Mogadore. Martin completed 25 of his 39 pass attempts in the title game Dec. 4.
Martin and the Indians won a school record six consecutive games to start the season, and finished with the most wins (13) and Midwest Athletic Conference victories (six) in program history.
