Collegiate Check-up
POINT OUTLOOCK, Missouri — Kegan Comer will play for a national championship tonight.
Comer, a 2013 Jay County High School graduate, and his University of St. Francis men’s basketball team had little trouble in Monday’s semifinal round of the NAIA Division II Tournament, rolling to a 79-55 victory over the Indiana University East Red Wolves.
The top-ranked Cougars (33-4) will face a familiar foe with the national title on the line as they take on second-seeded Indiana Wesleyan (32-5). The game will air live on ESPN3 at 7 p.m. tonight from University of the Ozarks’ Keeter Gymnasium.
The teams are Crossroads League rivals who played twice during the regular season and again in the conference tournament championship game this year. USF has won all three meetings by scores of 82-67, 87-74 and 81-80.
With 13 points Monday, Comer has scored in double figures in each of the Cougars’ four tournament games. He shot 5-of-8 from the field against Indiana University East and made three 3-pointers. He also had three assists, two rebounds and a block.
The Red Wolves, whose coaching staff includes 2006 JCHS graduate Tyler Rigby, led just once when a 3-pointer by Lucas Huffman put them up 3-2. The advantage lasted just 53 seconds before Austin Fox scored to put St. Francis ahead for good and start an 18-2 run.
During their tournament run, the Cougars have defeated Dakota State 96-81, Mount Mercy 89-81, Kesier 80-53 and IU East 79-55. They have won 16 straight games, with their last loss coming 87-86 to ninth-ranked Bethel on Jan. 19.
