Eagles rough up Patriot baseball team, 11-1

MUNCIE — The Patriots got a look at one of their new sectional opponents on Monday.
They’ll have some work to do should they meet in the postseason.
Jay County High School’s baseball team fell behind early and had a tough time keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard in an 11-1 loss to Delta in five innings.
Delta, which is now a sectional foe after the Patriots dropped to Class 3A this season, scored four runs in each of the first two innings. The Eagles tacked on three more in the third, all the while keeping the visiting Patriots (10-8) scoreless after a run in the first inning.
Ryan Schlechty and Ethan Myers had the only two hits for the Patriots. Jacob Geesaman, Chandler Jacks and Max Moser each drew a walk, and Schlecthy scored the lone run.
Myers took the loss. He gave up eight runs — five earned — on five hits in just two innings. He walked three and struck out two.
JC falls to Tigers
ALEXANDRIA — Jay County’s tennis team dropped its match to the Alexandria-Monroe Tigers on Monday, 4-1.
No. 2 singles player Shelby McClain earned the only victory for the Patriots, defeating Anna Etherington by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Kyra Braun lost to Colleen Matthew at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-3, and Megan Johnson dropped her No. 3 singles match to Jordan Fox, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Abby Reier and Abby Saxman lost to Blaine Kelly and Megan Miller 6-0. 6-0. Cousins Audrey and Kayla Dirksen fell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, to Mary Sayre and Alli Aiman.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team also lost, 2-4. At No. 3 singles, Katy Hamilton won 8-7 (7-5). At No. 2 doubles, Emily Reier and Betsy Muhlenkamp won 8-5.
JV baseball hangs on
Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team held off a late rally for a 6-5 victory Monday over the Heritage Patriots.
The host Patriots scored two runs in the first inning and four in the third for a 6-2 advantage. Heritage cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fifth, and tacked on one more in the sixth but could not complete the rally.
Chad Funk had a hit and an RBI to lead Jay County, which also got hits from Holton Hill, Jordan Schricker, Garrett Rodgers, Michael Stevens and Christian King.

JV softball loses
The Jay County junior varsity softball team resumed a rained out game with the Heritage Patriots on Monday, and lost 18-7 in five innings.
The game was picked up in the third inning with the visiting Patriots ahead 12-1. The score was 13-1 after three innings before Jay County scored five runs during the fourth inning to make it 13-6. But Heritage answered with five runs of its own and Jay County managed just one in the fifth in the shortened game.
Randi Ferguson had three singles and a run for Jay County, which also got two hits from Maggie Pryor and Hannah Phillips. Pryor scored once, while Phillips hit a triple and and single.
Phillips also shouldered the loss, as she gave up 12 runs before the game was delayed on Thursday.
Dues leads Pioneer
Max Dues provided a spark that helped Pioneer Packaging to a 15-2 victory Monday over Barnett’s Auto Parts in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball division.
Dues had a home run and added three singles for Pioneer, which got a triple, tow doubles and a single from Maddox Huffman and Dominick Bright. Jayden Comer chipped in with a triple, a double and three singles.
For Barnett’s Skyler Esparza, Benson Barnett, Gavin Thomas, Boston Barnett, Chase Baxter and Oaklan Ingram each had two singles.
MainSource wins
MainSource Bank defeated Inman U-Loc by a score of 13-3 in Willie Mays action of Portland Junior League.
Bryce Wenk had two hits and Gavin Young tallied one for MainSource. Koby Lewellen scored three times, with Carter Barton and Caleb Schlechty each scoring twice.
Lucas Strait, Will Strait and Tyler Ellsworth all had one hit for Inman. Sam Myers, Dawson Hundley, Cameron Daniels, Tyler Ellsworth and Will Strait each scored once.
