PARKER CITY — The Patriots have a winning streak again.
Jay County High School’s softball team scored five runs in the fifth inning and held off a late attempt at a rally Tuesday in defeating the Monroe Central Golden Bears 7-4.
It is the third win in a row for the Patriots (6-12) and the sixth in their last eight games after starting the season with 10 consecutive losses.
Jay County and Monroe Central were scoreless through the first two innings until the visitors scored twice in the top of the third inning. The Patriots pushed the lead to 7-0 with a five-run fifth before the Bears scored twice in the bottom of the frame.
Monroe Central tacked on one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t muster much more.
McKayla Norris and Kensey Litton had three hits apiece for the Patriots, who got RBI doubles from both Kady Finnerty and Chloe Trissel.
Emily Corn, Katie Carpenter, Rhegan Shimp and Catera Gierhart also had singles.
Rachel Antrim picked up the victory in the circle, improving to 3-4 on the year.
Jacks shuts out Bruins
Chandler Jacks made the most of his final opportunity to pitch at home, striking out a baker’s dozen as the Jay County baseball team beat the Blackford Bruins 2-0 on Tuesday for senior night.
Jacks, a Wabash College signee, scattered five hits and one walk over seven complete innings. His 13 punchouts are a career high.
At the plate, Jacks helped his cause with a double and a single. Freshmen Ryan Schlechty and Wyatt Geesaman and seniors Josh Vaughn, Gage Capper and Andy Kohler each had singles.
Max Moser drew a walk, and Jacob Geesaman had the lone RBI for the Patriots (11-8), who scored once in the first and sixth innings.
Dayton Dow and Brandon Barkdull each had two hits for the Bruins.
SA golfers third
MARION — The South Adams boys golf team finished third Tuesday in a three-team meet at Arbor Trace Golf Club.
The Oak Hill Golden Eagles had two players shoot under par for a team score of 144. Eastbrook was second with 165, and South Adams totaled 181.
McGerran Clouser led the Starfires. He had three pars and eagled the par-5 fifth hole to finish with a 42. Jacob Rife was second on the team with a 44, and David Muselman’s 46 was third. Dexter Miller completed the Starfires’ team score with a 49.
Zach Colpaert also competed and he shot a 57.
Cody White of Oak Hill was the match medalist with a 4-under par 32.
Jets rally past Jay
MONROE — The Jay County junior varsity baseball team gave up three runs in the seventh inning in a 6-5 loss Tuesday to Adams Central.
Jay County trailed 3-2 after four innings before taking a 5-3 advantage with a three-run fifth. The Patriots then kept the host Jets off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth frames before they rallied for the win.
Holton Hill and Gabe Fulkner led a 17-hit effort for Jay County with three hits apiece. They each drove in a run as well, and Faulkner had a double for the Patriots’ only extra-base hit.
Daniel Fugiett, Jordan Schricker, Michael Stevens and Isaac Moeller all had two hits. Garrett Rodgers, Connor Davis and Christian King had one hit apiece.
Stevens, King and Moeller each added RBIs.
Davis shouldered the loss. He gave up six earned runs on 11 hits. He walked five and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.
