A stable of veterans led a Rocket comeback in the season opener.
Mother Nature prevented them from doing it again.
The Portland Rockets opened their 2016 season Saturday with a doubleheader split with the Indiana Bandits of Greenfield.
Portland (1-1) rallied to win game one, 15-8, but lost were trailing 15-4 in the second game when it was called in the fifth inning because of inclement weather.
Trailing 7-2 in the sixth inning of the first game, three Rocket veterans played long ball in helping the home team erase the deficit. Mitch Waters, Billy Geeslin and TJ Lindstrand all deposited pitches over the outfield fence. The Rockets also had four triples in the inning and finished with 14 hits for the contest.
Zach Tanner, a Yorktown product who spent last season playing with the Frontier Grays of the independent Frontier League, returned to the Rockets and picked up where he left off. He hit a double and a triple and drove in five runs.
In game two, four pitchers were unable to keep the Bandits off the basepaths.
Portland returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Celina against the Grand Lake Mariners.
Gaskill scores 12
Alexander Gaskill totaled 12 goals in two games on Saturday, helping the Wasps to two victories in the opening day of Pennville Soccer League’s Stinger division.
The Wasps defeated the Hornets 9-4, then doubled up the Bees 14-7.
Samuel Davidson led the Wasps with five goals against the Hornets. Camden Vinson and Gaskill each had two goals.
Gaskill then scored 10 times against the Bees. Vinson added the other four.
For the Hornets, Max McClain III had three goals, and Wiley Simos found the back of the net once.
Eli Barger scored all seven goals for the Bees.
Galaxy 2-0
Joselyn Minch led the Galaxy to two wins Saturday in the Space division of Pennville Soccer League action.
Minch scored twice in a 4-2 victory over the Asteroids, then found twin five times in a 6-3 win against the Comets.
Ben Davison and Addi Gaskill each had a goal for the Galaxy against the Asteroids. Alexxis Shaneyfelt scored against the Comets.
David Keen provided the only offense for the Asteroids with his two goals. Cameron Marshall scored twice for the Comets, and Austin Pyle tallied one goal.
Jaguars win twice
Sheldon Minch and Brenden Runyon helped the Jaguars to a pair of wins Saturday in the Wildcat division of Pennville Soccer League.
The Jaguars defeated the Lions 6-5, then edged the Tigers by the same margin.
Minch and Runyon had three goals apiece against the Lions, and Runyon added four in the win over the Tigers. Gabe Pinkerton and Minch each scored once against the Tigers.
Alizabeth Stotler led the Lions with three scores, while Madison Springer and Kyler Witt each added one.
For the Tigers, Ian Ruiz scored three times as Mason Rector and Trenton Bleeke tallied one goal apiece.
