OSSIAN — The Starfires set a goal of winning more trophies this season.
They began the year by earning a piece of hardware.
South Adams High School’s girls swim team opened the season Saturday by finishing first in the Norwell Invitational.
The Starfires won four individual events and finished first in two relays to score 284 points, edging runner-up Oak Hill by three points. Bishop Dwenger was third with 191 points.
Ashton Klopp and Ashley LeFever both won two individual events. Klopp earned victories in both the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 2 minutes, 3.82 seconds, and 100 butterfly (1:01.35). LeFever earned the top spot in both freestyle sprints, winning the 100 freestyle (56.83 seconds) and 50 freestyle (25.85) races.
LeFever and Klopp joined Brette Klopp and Audrey Burson for a victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.08. LeFever, the Klopp twins and Caroline Kloepper won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.87.
Stars blast Bruins
HARTFORD CITY — Three players reached double figures Saturday as the South Adams girls basketball team defeated the host Blackford Bruins, 41-22.
The Starfires (1-0) jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the opening eight minutes, and held a 29-10 advantage at halftime. They held the Bruins (0-3) without a point during the third quarter in pushing the score to 37-10 heading into the final frame.
Lexi Dellinger led all players with 17 points, including 12 from behind the 3-point line. Madi Wurster and Sydney Pierce each tallied 10 points for the Starfires.
South Adams’ junior varsity team also won, 34-32.
Three place in top six
RICHMOND — A trio of competitors from JC Tumbling and Gymnastics had all-around scores place in the top six Saturday at the Giving Cup Gymnastics meet at Richmond Gymnastics Training Center.
Mackenzie Ring, a Level 7 gymnast, totaled 35 points to finish second in all-around.
Her best score (9.175) came on the vault, and she placed first on the uneven bars (9.0).
Karcie Hopkins, competing as a senior Level 3, was second on balance beam (8.2), fourth on bars (8.25) and sixth on vault (9.2) in finishing third in all-around with 33.9.
Level 4 gymnast Erin Ring was sixth in all-around with her total of 31.45. She was fifth on beam (8.5), floor exercise (8.05) and bars (7.3).
Katie Rowles (junior Level 3), Calie Yates (junior Level 3), Kami Fulford (senior Level 3) and Makinsey Murphy (senior Level 3) also competed for JC Flipsters.
