Farlow surpasses cut time

Collegiate Check-up

While a Starfire, Cady Farlow got to swim at the state’s highest level.

Now she’ll be an alternate for the collegiate national championships.

Farlow, a 2015 South Adams High School graduate, earned a national B cut for the Purdue University women’s swim team during the H2Okie Fall Invitational Thursday through Saturday at Virginia Tech.

The sophomore placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with her finals time of 2 minutes, 14.8 seconds, surpassing the B standard of 2:15.99. She cut 2.5 seconds off her time from the preliminary to finish as the runner-up.

She added a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.1), and was 49th in the 50 freestyle (24.57).

Farlow swam the breaststroke leg of the 400 medley relay with Hanna House, 2014 Muncie Central graduate Emmy Rawson and Gracie Hernandez. She had a split of 1:02.3 as the quartet finished in 3:42.24.

Farlow, House and Hernandez then teamed with Meagan Lim to place third in the 200 medley relay. Farlow’s breaststroke split was 28.18, and they had a time of 1:41.21.



Sawyer Miller

South Adams – 2015

Had his unbeaten streak come to an end for the Indiana Tech wrestling team on Saturday in the Campbellsville Duals hosted by Camblesville University.

Miller, a 125-pound sophomore ranked fifth in his weight class, defeated Austin Sales of University of the Cumberlands 6-0 and edged Trung Duong of Newberry College 6-5. He was 8-0 on the season before falling to Adrian Camposano of Campbellsville University, 12-7.



Katy Smeltzer

Jay County – 2015

Swam the freestyle leg in five relays for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team Saturday through Sunday at the Magnus Cup hosted by Cleveland State University.

Smeltzer helped the 800 freestyle relay team of Morgan Plowman, Christina Klouda and Brittany Litke finish 19th in 7 minutes, 59.55 seconds. She swam the first leg with a split of 1:50.71. The same four finished 22nd in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.39).

Along with Nicole Ceausu, Litke and Klouda, Smeltzer helped the Patriots finish 24th in both the 200 medley relay (1:52.33) and 400 freestyle relay (3:38.35). They were 25th in the 400 medley relay in 4:04.28.



James Keen

Jay County – 2015

Earned a pair of top-three finishes for the Tiffin University men’s swim team Saturday in a 117-82 loss to Ashland.

Keen was second in the 100 backstroke with his time of 55.54 seconds, and added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 55.07 seconds.



Anne Vormohr

Jay County – 2016

Was part of two victories for the Ball State University women’s swim team in a 151-149 victory on Saturday over Grand Valley State University

The freshman helped open the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay along with Amanda Kedzierski, Andrea Richter and Jessica Extine. She swam the backstroke leg in 27.61 seconds, as the quartet finished with a time of 1 minute, 47.43 seconds. Her other victory came in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.59 seconds.

She was also fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.35), and helped the 800 freestyle relay team of Audrey Mayer, Allie Kolz and Lauren Elston finish fourth in 8:03.3.



Sophie Bader

Jay County – 2016

Also swam for the Ball State University women’s swim team in its win over Grand Valley State.

Bader was second in the 100 butterfly in 58.91 seconds, and added a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:09.27.

The freshman swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay team of Courtney Mudd, Mason Dahman and Peighton Gilbert that finished third in 1:51.39. Bader had a split of 26.27 seconds.

Bader, Elizabeth Madison, Amanda Kedzierski and Cassidy Blackwin were third in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:51.91. Bader swam the first leg in 1:58.09.



Wade Gelhaus

Fort Recovery - 2013

Set his season high in scoring Saturday to help lead the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team to a 94-53 victory over Ohio Valley.

Gelhaus turned in a strong shooting afternoon, going 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line for 15 points. He was also second on the team with eight rebounds while adding one assist.

The senior totaled five points, three assists and two rebounds Thursday as the Cardinals (4-0) defeated Lewis 82-71.



Scott Schwieterman

Jay County - 2013

Was the No. 2 scorer for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team Saturday in its 71-67 victory over Siena Heights.

Schwieterman shot 50 percent from the field and made all of his six free throws to finish with 16 points for the Warriors (5-1), whose only lose is to top-ranked St. Francis. He also had three rebounds.

The junior is averaging 12.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season, both second-best on the Indiana Tech squad.



Abby Wendel

Jay County – 2016

Set a new career-high in scoring for the University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team Friday in a 97-69 victory over Salem (West Virginia) International in the Bevo Francis Invitational Tournament.

The freshman made both of her two-point field goals and was 4-of-5 from the free-throw line to finish with eight points. She set her previous career-high with five points Nov. 9.

She also added an offensive rebound and one steal in nearly 10 minutes of action.



Catherine Dunn

Jay County – 2015

Played for the Brescia University women’s basketball team in a pair of losses.

The sophomore notched three points and one rebound in an 83-47 loss Saturday to Lee University, then had seven points and three rebounds in a 104-53 defeat Monday at the hands of Shawnee State.



Cindy In’t Groen

South Adams – 2016

Came off the bench for the Huntington University women’s basketball team Friday in its 114-28 victory over Great Lakes Christian College.

The former Starfire was 0-for-3 from the field but made both of her free-throw attempts to finish with two points. She also grabbed six rebounds, which was tied for third on the team, and had three assists and one steal in almost 13 minutes of action.



Elijah Kahlig

FRHS – 2014

Finished third in scoring for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in an 85-63 victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday.

Kahlig came off the bench to play 23 minutes, going 3-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-6 from long range, to total eight points. He also grabbed two rebounds, dished two assists and had one steal for the Oilers (2-1).
