Four Indians competed at the district meet in seven events last season.
With each swim, a new record was set.
Three of them return this season, and they’ve got some company rarely seen around Fort Recovery.
“I am looking forward to the fact I do have a larger team,” said Mindy Bubp, Fort Recovery High School’s swim coach. The Indians have 18 members — 11 girls, seven boys — on their squad, up from 14 last year. “That’s the largest overall team we’ve had. Gives me a little more flexibility to look at team things as far as relays.”
Alexis Bubp, Cassidy Martin, Cori Stone and Sophie Timmerman combined to win medals in both the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, finishing fifth and eighth respectively. They were also 11th in the 200 freestyle relay.
Stone, who graduated in May, became the school’s first district medalist with her school-record time of 1 minute, 1.34 seconds in the 100 butterfly to finish fifth. While the Tribe’s most decorated swimmer is gone, Bubp, Martin and Timmerman all return from stellar seasons.
“I do have three strong swimmers, two juniors Sophie and Alexis,” said Mindy Bubp, whose team opens its season Saturday in the Celina Sprints at Jay County High School. Timmerman was 12th in the 100 breaststroke at district and Alexis Bubp was 24th in the 100 freestyle.
“They both came back off district swims and have always been strong,” Bubp said,” Same as Cassy Martin my sophomore.”
As a freshman, Martin finished 17th in the 100 freestyle.
Sydney Alig and Faith Hull are the lone seniors on the girls’ squad. Hull will be taking over the butterfly duties in the absence of Stone, and Alig will be a freestyle swimmer.
A host of juniors have come out for the swim team for the first time, and they include Claire Evers, Madi Grover, Kelsey Jutte and Claire Metzger. Bubp isn’t quite sure how they will fill in yet, but noted she’s excited interest in the sport is building.
“I think it’s important for us in general that maybe our program is growing a little bit,” she said. The boys team also has a few first-time swimmers in Andrew Stocker, Matt Kuess and Robby LeFevre.
“We’re seeing these new swimmers that are interested in continuing to do things (for the school),” Bubp continued. “They want to try different sports. We had a strong team, and I think that kids can realize that swimming can be strong for Fort Recovery.”
Rachel Acheson is the lone female freshman, and she was a key competitor for the middle school and summer swim teams. Bubp is hopeful her skills will continue to improve at the high school level.
Junior Harrison Kaup as well as sophomores Owen Sheridan and Nolan Thobe return to the FRHS boys roster.
With the three new swimmers as well as freshman Josh Gonzalez, Bubp said she is hopeful they can focus on team goals.
“That gives us a lot of potential for some relays we haven’t been able to do in the past,” Bubp said “Gives me a little more flexibility to look at team things as far as relays.”
Swimming is not a Midwest Athletic Conference sport, but the Coldwater Invitational includes all MAC schools that field teams.
Last season, Fort Recovery’s girls finished third at that event, and with more members in the program this year, Bubp is confident the Tribe will be more competitive against those rivals.
“I think we will compete better because we have larger numbers and we’ll be able to score more points … especially on the boys side more than in the past,” she said. “Being able to fill relays I’m hoping it will help our team scores. Generally with larger numbers the kids push each other.”
Fort Recovery swims at Jay County three times, including its season opener. The Indians will compete in the Jay County Invitational on Jan. 7, and return again three weeks later in the Coldwater Cavalier Invitational.
The Indians also cross the state line for double duals at Delta (Dec. 5) and Burris (Jan. 17). FRHS meets South Adams on Jan. 3.
Bubp said she is looking forward to the individual successes of her swimmers, but is also looking forward to the relays despite being unsure of who will make up those teams.
“I’ll have strong individual events and I know we’ll do well in the relays, I just don’t know how things will play out yet,” she said.
