DELPHOS, Ohio — Coming off of a defeat at Versailles and with a game against Division VI No. 2 Marion Local looming, the Indians could hardly afford to end up on the wrong end of the scoreboard Friday.
That looked like it might be a possibility after St. John’s scored first. But the Fort Recovery High School football team’s defense never allowed the host Blue Jays to put another point on the board and Will Homan put the offense on his back on the way to a 17-7 victory.
The St. John’s lead lasted less than three minutes, as Caleb Martin connected with Homan for a 26-yard touchdown pass to pull the Indians (5-2, 3-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) even.
Kicker Tyler Acheson, who also hit on both of his extra-point tries, gave the Tribe the lead for good on a 32-yard field goal with 3:30 to play in the third quarter. A Homan 1-yard scoring run with 2:16 remaining sealed the win.
Fort Recovery did most of its damage on the ground, with Homan racking up 189 yards on 36 carries. He ran the ball on eight of nine plays to set up the Acheson field goal, then toted it every time on an 81-yard, 12-play drive for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Martin completed four of his 15 pass attempts for 49 yards.
Meanwhile, the Tribe defense — Ethan Schoen led the way with 10 tackles — limited the Blue Jays (4-3, 3-2 MAC) to 195 yards of offense while creating one turnover and forcing six punts. The home team’s four second-half drives ended in three punts and an interception.
Jared Wurst ran 10 times for 40 yards for St. John’s, scoring its lone TD on a 6-yard run. He also completed four passes for 57 yards, and Jacob Youngpeter added four more for 54 yards. Eric Vogt finished with 57 receiving yards on three catches.
The Indians will host Marion Local (6-1, 4-1 MAC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
