INDIANAPOLIS — The Patriots will get a bye to the semifinal.
Defending champ South Adams opens with a familiar opponent.
In the IHSAA volleyball sectional tournament draw held this morning, the Jay County High School volleyball team received an opening-round bye in the Class 4A Sectional 6 tournament at Muncie Central.
The Patriots (16-10) play in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. Oct. 22, and they await the winner between Fort Wayne South Side (1-16) and Concordia (15-7), which play in the opening round at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
On Oct. 20, Huntington North (23-8) and Homestead (4-14) meet at 6 p.m., with host Muncie Central (18-10) squaring off against Wayne (0-20) at 7:30 p.m. the same night. The second semifinal is slated for 12:30 p.m. Oct. 22 and the championship match will be later that day at 7 p.m.
In the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament at Bluffton, the host Tigers (10-8) play Churubusco (14-16) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18, with the winner meeting Adams Central (6-14) in the first semifinal at 10 a.m. Oct. 22.
Other opening-round matchups pit Eastside (2-22) against Canterbury (9-12) at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 and Woodlan (13-14) versus defending sectional champion South Adams (20-8) at 7:30 p.m. The second semifinal is 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22, with the sectional championship scheduled for 4 p.m. Oct. 22.

FR gets No. 3 seed
COLUMBUS — In the OHSAA volleyball sectional tournament draw held Sunday, the Fort Recovery High School volleyball team earned the No. 3 seed in the Division III Kalida District and will host No. 12 seed Riverside in the sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Oct. 19.
The winner between Fort Recovery (10-7) and Riverdale (9-9) meets either fifth-seeded Defiance Tinora (19-1) or No. 11 seed Allen East in the sectional championship at 1 p.m. Oct. 22. The team with the higher seed will host the sectional final, and the winner of that sectional advances to the district semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Kalida.
The other sectional has No. 2 seed St. Henry (13-7) hosting either seventh-seeded Liberty-Benton (15-5) or eighth-seeded Columbus Grove (13-5) at 1 p.m. Oct. 22.
No. 13 seed Bluffton (5-13) meets either top-seeded and third-ranked Coldwater (17-3) or 14th-seeded Delphos Jefferson (4-15) in the sectional championship. The other sectional semifinals pit No. 10 seed Paulding at No. 4 seed Patrick Henry (16-2), and No. 9 seed Van Buren (11-9) at No. 6 seed Parkway (12-8).
The first district semifinal is slated for 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Kalida, with the championship slated for 4 p.m. Oct. 29.

Two finish first
LAFAYETTE — Hannah Outcalt and Courtney Miles both finished first in the all-around competition Saturday and Sunday in the USA Gymnastics Graveyard Smash at Jefferson High School.
Outcalt, a West Jay Middle School eighth grader, scored 8.9 on vault and uneven bars to finish first in both events as an Xcel Gold competitor. She added a 9.2 (third) on floor exercise and 8.6 (fourth) on balance beam for an all around score of 35.6.
Miles, a junior at Jay County High School, finished first on beam with an 8.95. She was second on both floor (8.9) and bars (8.65), and placed third on vault (8.35) for an all around total of 34.85 as a Level 8 gymnast.
