The defending state champs visited Portland on Thursday.
The Patriots weren’t able to pull off a third straight upset against the Raiders.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team lost in three sets to the Class 2A No. 1 reigning state champion Wapahani Raiders, 25-14, 25-18, 25-12.
It marked a loss in back-to-back matches for the Patriots (5-4), who had previously won five straight. They had also beaten the Raiders each of the last two seasons.
Senior Abby Barcus paced the Jay County offense with seven kills. She also had eight digs, which was second on the team to junior Chloe Trissel’s 10.
Britlyn Dues chipped in with six kills and one block, with sophomore setters Kailee Denney and Kendal Garringer contributing 10 and eight assists respectively.
Audrey Shreve also had one block.
Junior varsity scores and stats were not provided.

Girls blank Knights
OSSIAN — Three goals in the second half and stellar defense throughout gave the Jay County girls soccer team a 3-0 victory Thursday against the host Norwell Knights.
After playing scoreless for the first 40 minutes, JCHS junior Irene Braun broke the tie with her second goal of the season on an assist by Lucy Laux in the 50th minute.
Laux then tallied her seventh goal of the year nine minutes later for a 2-0 JCHS lead, and Kendra Muhlenkamp was credited with the helper.
Then with 10 minutes remaining, freshman Mikele Suman scored her first career goal following a corner kick from senior Stormi Canterbury, who was making her season debut after serving a four-game suspension.
Goalkeeper Lilly Rogers made eight saves for Jay County, which moves to 4-1 on the year.
The junior varsity squad played to a 1-1 tie, with Muhlenkamp tallying the lone Patriot goal on an assist from Anhely Montes.
Giants top JC
MARION — The Jay County boys tennis team fell to 0-6 on the season in a 5-0 loss Thursday to the Marion Giants.
Conner Benter, a JCHS sophomore, lost 6-0, 6-1 to Mathew Renbarger at No. 3 singles, as the only Patriot to not get shut out.
At No 1 singles, Garrett Rodgers lost to Riley Worland 6-0, 6-0, and Paytno Heniser dropped his No. 2 singles match to Noah Lyons by the same margin.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Luke Weaver and Kyler Hudson dropped their match to Jonathan Watts and Nick Spitzer 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore tandem Xavier Ninde and Gabe Blankenship lost at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0 as well.
In junior varsity action, the Patriots lost 3-2.
Calvin Whitney defeated Patrick Spitzer 8-3, and a doubles team of Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall knocked off Nihal Nagesn and Ianne Sierra 8-1.

East Jay boys win
East Jay Middle School’s boys cross country team finished first in a three-team meet with Adams Central and West Jay on Thursday at Hudson Family Park.
The Chiefs scored 25 points to take the title, with Adams Central scoring 31 for second and West Jay totaling 65 for third.
Adams Central’s girls won with 30 points, ahead of East Jay (37) and West Jay (66).
Mitchel Winner finished first for East Jay in the boys race with a time of 12 minutes, 18.71 seconds. Xavier Myers was the runner-up, with Flint Schmiesing (fifth), Tyler Manor (eighth) and Dustin Harris (ninth) completing the team score.
Gage Baker was the top West Jay runner, crossing in 10th place. Aaron Funkhouser was 12th, with Trenton Alexander finishing 15th, Skyler Bee 17th and Jevin Alexander 19th.
In the girls race, Mara Bader led East Jay by finishing in third, one spot ahead of teammate Miranda Alig. Lindy Wood was sixth, Lydia Keihn placed 10th and Rachel Heitkamp was 15th.
Sophia Fugiett was the lead West Jay runner, finishing second. Raven Weaver crossed in 12th, Aubrey Hatzell was 16th, Grace Shimp placed 19th and Sam Donberger was 20th.

Faulnker leads WJ
MONROEVILLE — Quinn Faulkner scored twice in leading the West Jay football team to a season-opening victory Tuesday against the host Heritage Patriots, 22-0.
Faulkner scored on runs of 40 and 18 yards, as he totaled 122 yards on the ground. He also completed two passes for 26 yards. Andrew Powers had one catch for 20 yard, and Faulkner connected with Riley Foster for a two-point conversion.
Caleb Hale had five carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. He and Faulkner also had interceptions, while Powers had a team-high six tackles.
