HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots have doubled their win total.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team won for the second time this season on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over the host Blackford Bruins.
The victory pushed the Patriots to 2-5 on the season and snapped a three-game losing streak. The last win for Jay County — which meets South Adams at noon on Saturday in Berne — was Aug. 22, a 6-1 triumph on the road against Woodlan.
Daniel Fugiett scored in the first half to give the visiting Patriots a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Then, 45 seconds after intermission, Angel Perez found twine to put Jay County ahead 2-0.
With 18 minutes left in the game, the ball bounced around on a scramble play in front of the Blackford net, and Ian McCombs tapped the ball into the back of the net for the third and final tally of the night.
Jason Schlosser also recorded an assist.
Jay golfers fall
Jay County’s girls golf team lost a dual match to the Delta Eagles on Thursday, 187-218, at Portland Golf Club.
Cassie Reno turned in a team-low 51, while Kendra Dodd was close behind with a 53 and Carlie Wickey shot a 56. Madison Brown finished with 58 to complete the team score for Jay County, which fell to 7-6 on the year in dual matches.
Also competing were Madalyn Garringer (65) and Sierra Caster (75).
In junior varsity action, freshman Mackenzie Parks turned in the highlight of the evening, hitting her first career hole in one. She aced the par-3 15th hole by using a nine iron. She finished with a 57.
Téa Nichols shot a 67, and she was followed by Eden Basford (71), Gabi Paxson (73) and Olivia Willey (73).
JC tennis loses
The Jay County boys tennis team fell to .500 in conference play Thursday with a 5-0 loss to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
The Patriots dropped to 2-7 (1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) after back-to-back wins earlier this week.
At No. 1 singles, Garrett Rodgers fell to Mitchell Kuhlenbeck 6-2, 6-0, and Payton Heniser lost 6-3, 6-1 to Evan Baumgartner at No. 2 singles.
Conner Benter, who was the savior a night earlier, dropped his No. 3 singles match to Landon McClish 6-3, 6-1.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Luke Weaver and Kyler Hudson fell to Karsen Greenway and Gabve Eisenhunt 6-3, 7-6 (7-0).
At No. 2 doubles, Mason Heller and Spencer Schwartz defeated JCHS sophomores Xavier Ninde and Gabe Blankenship 6-0, 6-0.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 5-1. Calvin Whitney earned the only win for the Patriots, a 6-0 triumph over Hayden Craighead.
