A former Patriot and his Cougar teammates continue to roll.
Eric Hemmelgarn, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, started Saturday for the University of Saint Francis football team in a 37-6 victory against the Taylor Trojans.
Hemmelgarn, who started for the second time in as many games, was fourth on the team with six tackles, including 1 1/2 in the backfield.
Late in the first quarter, Hemmelgarn brought down running back Rich Giordani behind the line of scrimmage for a 1-yard loss. During the second quarter, the sophomore teamed with Lucas Sparks to tackle Tim Barrett for another 1-yard loss.
Hemmelgarn finished with two solo tackles and four assists, as the Cougars, who moved up one spot to No. 3 in the NAIA poll, improved to 3-0 (2-0 Mid-States Football Association Mideast League) on the season. Saint Francis hosts Lindenwood University at noon Sept. 24 before a matchup with defending NAIA national champion Marian on Oct. 1.
Derek Wanner
South Adams – 2016
Played for the Taylor University football team Saturday in a 37-6 loss to NAIA No. 4 University of Saint Francis.
Wanner recorded one solo tackle and assisted on two others as the Trojans fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in MSFA-Mideast play.
The defensive back teamed with Dexter Davis to tackle USF receiver Montay McDowell in the second quarter, and added his other assist in the fourth quarter.
The former Starfire’s solo stop was in the final period, as he brought down Sean Boswell after a 15-yard gain.
Gabbie Mann
Jay County – 2016
Started for the second time this season for the IPFW women’s soccer team Sunday in a 4-0 loss to the Butler Bulldogs.
Mann, a freshman, logged a career-high 46 minutes in the defeat without registering a shot as the Mastodons fell to 2-6 on the season.
Jay County’s career goal leader also played 17 minutes as a substitute in a 2-0 loss Friday to Valparaiso.
Mann has played in all eight games this season for IPFW, averaging 26 minutes per game. She has taken one shot and tallied one assist.
Kirsten Jutte
Fort Recovery – 2016
Posted a career-high 42 assists Saturday for the Capital University volleyball team during the Golden Flyer Invitational hosted by Nazareth.
Jutte also had a team-high three aces to go along with nine digs and two kills in the 3-1 loss to Medaille (N.Y.). She added 33 assists, a dozen digs, two kills and a team-high four aces Saturday morning as the Crusaders (3-6) lost 3-1 to host Nazareth.
On the opening day of the tournament Friday, Jutte tallied 14 assists with a team-high eight digs in a 3-0 loss to Oswego State.
Jutte leads the team with 221 assists, has totaled seven kills and is fourth on the team with 62 digs.
Cassidy Rammel
Fort Recovery – 2015
Posted team-high kill totals for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team in a pair of losses recently.
The sophomore tied for the team-high of 15 kills in a 3-2 loss to the Taylor Trojans on Saturday. She also had 11 digs, one solo block and assisted on two others. She followed that performance with a team-high four kills to go with her two digs in a 3-0 loss to Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday.
On Friday, Rammel was second on the team with 10 kills in a 3-1 loss to Mt. Vernon Nazarene. She also had four digs for the Cougars, 2-11, who have lost 11 straight matches.
Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Finished second on the team in digs Saturday in the second of two wins for the University of Northwestern Ohio volleyball team at the Indiana Tech Invitational.
Fiely’s 10 digs were second only to teammate Taina Soranzo in the Racers’ three-game shutout of Hannibal-LaGrange. She also had seven digs, two aces and an assist earlier in the day in a 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 win over Robert Morris.
The senior added six digs and two aces Wednesday as UNOH defeated Marygrove in a sweep to extend its winning streak to three matches and climb above .500 at 9-8.
Ava Kunkler
Jay County – 2016
Played in two matches recently for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team.
Kunkler did not register any stats in a 3-1 loss Friday to Mt. Vernon Nazarene. She had one kill on five attacks on Wednesday, a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Indiana Wesleyan.
Rachel Antrim
Jay County – 2016
Played for the Trine University women’s golf team Wednesday in the Trine University Fall Classic.
Antrim played for the Trine C team, which finished eighth out of nine teams with a score of 416. University of Northwestern Ohio won with 320, Trine’s A team (328) was second and Cleary (331) was third.
The former Patriot was 39th overall with her score of 112. She was third on the team.
