FORT RECOVERY — Will Homan didn’t think about his ailing hamstring.
Instead, he squeezed every bit of effort his right leg gave him.
Homan rushed 26 times for 125 yards and four touchdowns and caught one pass for another TD as he outscored the Wildcats by himself, leading the Division VII No. 5 Fort Recovery High School football team to a 33-21 victory Friday over the Minster Wildcats.
“Once you get into the game adrenaline just kicks in,” Homan said about not letting his leg bother him too much. “Big game for us because they’re in our region. We needed the win and we got it.”
Brent Niekamp, Fort Recovery’s coach, knew Homan would do anything necessary to help the Indians (4-1, 2-1 Midwest Athletic Conference).
“He is a warrior,” said Niekamp, whose team was ranked sixth in the first Division VII Region 28 computer rankings released Tuesday. “He’ll do anything to win, on one leg, two or none. It doesn’t matter to him. It is really, really important to him to help this team succeed, so everything he does is based on that.”

Niekamp wasted no time using Homan and his legs offensively. After Minster (3-2, 0-3 MAC) went three-and-out on its opening drive, the Indians took over on their own 35-yard line. Homan then carried the ball on nine of his team’s 10 plays, covering 54 yards of the 65-yard scoring drive and capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown.
He then found the end zone from 7 and 3 yards out respectively during the second quarter, the first of which gave the Indians a 14-7 lead, the second a 21-14 advantage with 25 seconds before halftime.
Homan’s fourth touchdown came through the air late in the third quarter, giving his team the lead for good.
The Tribe took over at the Minster 39-yard-line after the Wildcats had another three-and-out. Four plays later, quarterback Jason Roessner completed a 7-yard pass to Payton Jutte on fourth-and-4. After Roessner called his own number for 2 yards on first down, he threw a pass to Ryan Braun on the right side of the field but behind the line of scrimmage.
Braun took three steps to his right and launched a pass to Homan who was nearing the end zone. Homan broke off his route for the slightly underthrown ball, and caught it 2-yards deep in the end zone for the go-ahead score.
“It was a good pass by Ryan Braun,” Homan said. His fifth and final touchdown all but sealed the game, as he scored from 20 yards out late in the fourth quarter on third-and-12. He was sandwiched between two defenders at the 9-yardline, spun around but kept his balance and trotted into the end zone.
Roessner finished 9-of-15 passing for 113 yards and an interception while adding 15 carries for 58 yards in his second game under center in place of University of Toledo commit Caleb Martin, who missed the last two games because of an appendectomy.
“Jason Roessner has been awesome,” Homan said. “I love playing with him. One of the smartest dudes to play football with.”
Niekamp had similar things to say about his senior.
“I’m really proud of Jason,” he said. “He is such a smart football player and that’s why we put him there.
Roessner also plays every snap on defense, and he finished the night with four tackles. Cashaus Metzger had a team-high nine stops, including a sack and a forced fumble.
“We are fortunate to have Caleb, but Jason does such a good job managing things. He’s a tough runner.”
Just as Homan and Roessner teamed to beat up on Minster’s defense, the Wildcats’ offense did as much damage to the Tribe defense.
Quarterback Jared Huelsman was 18-for-33 for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 57 rushing yards and one TD on 12 carries. Huelsman picked on Fort Recovery’s undersized corners, finding Jonathan Niemeyer six times for 175 yards and both scores. On the first, he slipped behind the defense for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He beat double coverage for a 38-yard score in the second.
One of those corners was Davis Will, but the senior redeemed himself by getting a game-clinching interception with 16 seconds left in the contest.
“That’s the other thing I talk to the corners about, good defensive backs have to have a short memory,” said Niekamp, also noting his team’s two defensive stops in the red zone. “They’re going to go after you. They’ll make some plays sometimes but just hang in there and keep trying to make plays because that’s the only way you can.
“Sounds like they’re listening to us a little bit. (Will) was hanging in there laying hard and competing and made that play to seal it.”
