WOODBURN — One more win and the Starfires are champions.
The South Adams High School volleyball team continued its tear through the Allen County Athletic Conference on Tuesday, sweeping the host Woodlan Warriors 25-16, 26-15, 25-18.
The win moves the Starfires to 17-5 on the season and 5-0 in Allen County Athletic Conference play ahead of a matchup Thursday with county rival Adams Central.
Madi Wurster totaled eight kills to lead South Adams. Morgan Alberson was second with six kills. She also had two aces and seven digs. Addie Wanner chipped in with four kills and shared the team-high of three blocks with Jade Farlow.
Shania Neal racked up 18 digs, and Caralie Farlow tallied 10 digs to go with her three kills. Julia Grabau set up the offense with 17 assists.
The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 25-8, 25-20.
Alivia Bergman had a team-high four kills. with Lydia Loshe, Hannah Beitler, Kylee Bixler and Courtney Fox all had two kills.
Hannah Dull notched 17 digs and Loshe joined her in double figures with 10.
Indians move up
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The defending Division VII state champion Fort Recovery football team moved up one spot this week in the OHSAA computer rankings.
The Indians (4-1), who stayed put at No. 5 in the most recent Associated Press poll, received 5.5 points to finish fourth, a mere 0.15 behind third-ranked Miami Valley Christian Academy.
Covington (5-0) stayed atop the rankings with a score of 8.25, and Troy Christian (4-1) was second with 5.9. DeGraff Riverside (4-1) was fifth with 4.35, Ada (3-2) placed sixth with 4.25, Springfield Catholic Central (4-1) came in seventh with 4.1, and Lehman Catholic (3-2) was eighth with 3.8. Cincinnati Gamble Montessori (3-2) 3.45 finished ninth and Minster (2-3) was 10th with 2.95.
The top eight teams from each region earn playoff berths.
Tribe wins
ROCKFORD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s seventh grade volleyball team stayed perfect in conference play while the eighth graders also won Tuesday against the Parkway Panthers.
The seventh grade Indians earned a 23-25, 25-21, 25-20 win, and the eighth graders won 25-19, 25-9.
Faith Grube had one ace and a team-high 11 service points to lead the seventh-grade Tribe (12-1, 6-0 Midwest Athletic Conference). Lilie Leuthold was second on the team with 10 points, she also had six digs. Madelyn Knapke and Aubrey Knapke had a half dozen points, with Madelyn Knapke totaling a 12 assists.
Marissa Gaerke led the team with 15 kills and eight digs.
Paige Fortkamp and Hope Wendel had four kills each to lead the eighth graders. Wendel also had a pair of aces and eight service points.
Brenna Homan tallied four aces and eight points, and Ava Bubp had five aces to go with her seven assists. Kyra Clark added seven assists.
SA undefeated
BERNE — South Adams’ seventh and eighth grade football teams both dominated county rival Adams Central on Tuesday.
The SAMS eighth graders won 48-0, and the seventh grade squad won 25-6.
James Arnold scored four touchdowns to lead the Starfire eighth graders (5-0, 5-0 Allen County Athletic Conference). He found Nick Miller for two touchdowns in the first quarter, then had two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter.
Christian Summersett, Alex Gorney and Kaidon Flueckiger also had rushing touchdowns.
Aidan Wanner accounted for all 25 points, scoring four times and also adding a PAT run. Wanner finished with 160 rushing yards on 12 carries, and completed two of his three pass attempts for 33 yards.
