PITSBURG, Ohio — The Tribe needed three pitchers.
The Jets still didn’t get a hit.
Three Fort Recovery High School players tossed a no-hitter Monday as the Indian baseball team defeated host Franklin-Monroe, 7-6.
The Indians (3-1) scored two runs in the top of the first inning before tacking on one in each of the second and third innings. Both teams plated two in the fourth inning before Franklin-Monroe tied the game at six apiece with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Indians nabbed the lead for good on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning.
Ben Homan picked up his third win of the season, throwing three innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs with three strikeouts and four walks. Cade Wendel started and lasted 3 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs — two earned — with six walks and three punchouts. Micaiah Cox also pitched, throwing 1/3 of an inning, giving up one earned run with two walks.
Homan led the Indians with two hits, and Will Homan knocked in two runs with one hit.
SA shuts out Indians
BERNE — South Adams’ softball team began its season Monday with a 7-0 victory over the Union City Indians.
The Starfires (1-0) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before adding four more in the third. They tacked on one more run in each of the fourth and fifth frames while continuing to keep the visiting Indians off the scoreboard.
Taylor Augsburger paced the Starfires at the dish by smacking two doubles and driving in three runs. Isabella Ramirez and Katelin Augsburger also had doubles, while Tori Raugh and Casi Evans also had singles.
Katelin Augsburger got the win in the circle, giving up one hit, striking out 15 and walking three in six innings of work.
Weather halts Stars
OSSIAN — The South Adams baseball team led the host Norwell Knights 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday before the game was called because of inclement weather.
The contest does not count as an official game.
Grant Besser shouldered all the work for the Starfires, tossing 4 1/3 innings on the bump, allowing one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. He also had two singles to lead the SAHS offense, which also got hits from Marcus Teeter, Jayden Dull and Corbin Blomeke.
South Adams scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning. With runners at the corners, Mark Clary laid down a bunt and reached on an error. Dull and Blomeke both scored on the play.
FR softball falls
PITSBURG, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team fell to 0-4 on the season Monday with a 10-0 loss to Franklin-Monroe in five innings.
The host Jets scored two runs in each of the first, third and fifth frames, while striking four four runs in the fourth, despite only getting five hits.
Emily Hart and Hannah Knapke both had singles for Fort Recovery, which didn’t have a runner reach second base.
Devin Post suffered the loss, giving up eight runs — three earned — on four hits. She also walked six and struck out two in four innings. Olivia Homan also pitched, and she surrendered two earned runs on one hit while giving up a walk
Tribe JV wins
FORT RECOVERY — Joe Homan had three hits and Garrett Faller drove in a pair of runs as the Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team defeated Bradford, 12-7.
The Indians (1-1) fell behind 7-2 after the third inning. The Tribe began to chip away with a three-run fourth inning, and nabbed a 9-7 lead behind a four-run effort in the fifth inning. For good measure, FRHS padded the lead with two runs in the home half of the sixth.
Faller ripped two doubles while also drawing two walks. Homan had a double and two singles, while also picking up the win in relief. He tossed five innings, scattered five hits, struck out nine and walked one without giving up a walk.
Josh Muhlenkamp, Gabe Combs, Ian Homan, Cole Grisez and Owen Schoen each had singles.
