YORKTOWN — The Patriots picked up five victories Thursday.

Lucy Laux had her hand in three of them.

Laux, a Jay County High School junior, had a pair of individual victories and helped a winning relay as the Jay County girls track team finished second in a three-team meet with the Delta Eagles and host Yorktown Tigers.

Yorktown won with a team score of 67, edging Jay County by nine. Delta was third with 31.

Jay County’s boys scored 25 points to place third, behind Yorktown (69)?and Delta (62).

Laux won the 100-meter dash in 13.22 seconds, and had a distance of 14 feet, 11 inches to win high jump. Laux anchored the 4x100 relay with Karlie Bullard, Calli Stigleman and Taylor Homan for a time of 53.12 seconds.

Kendal Garringer and Taylor Muhlenkamp also earned victories for the Patriots (4-2). Garringer had a height of 4 feet, 8 inches, to win high jump, and Muhlenkamp threw the discus 91 feet, 8 inches.

Andrew Trewyn earned the only win for the JCHS boys, finishing first in shot put at 40 feet, 9 inches.

 
Jay tops Raiders

FARMLAND — Jay County’s boys golf team picked up its first win of the season Thursday.

The Patriots defeated sectional rival and host Wapahani Raiders 171-185 at Hickory Hills Golf Club.

Nick Hayden led the Patriots (1-1) by shooting a 3-over par 38. Collin Haines followed with a 41, and Kyler Hudson turned in the No. 3 team score with a 45. Jay Houck completed the team score for Jay County with a 47.

Ian James also competed and he finished with 54.

Jay County’s junior varsity team edged Wapahani, 232-236.

Conner Benter and Elijah Corwin had matching scores of 55 to lead the Patriots. Matthew Franks was two strokes behind with 57, and Joey Hall shot 65 to complete the team total.



Tennis falls to Tigers

BLUFFTON — The Jay County girls tennis team dropped its Allen County Athletic Conference opener Thursday with a 3-2 loss to Bluffton.

Junior Shelby McClain won her No. 1 singles match against Hannah Gerber. She nabbed the first set 7-5, and won a 7-1 tiebreak to take the second set 7-6. At No. 3 singles, Francine Muhlenkamp defeated Kirsten Bennett 6-3, 6-3.

Megan Johnson lost her No. 2 singles match to Madison Heller, 6-2, 6-0.

Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Audrey Dirksen and Kayla Dirksen lost to Claudia Williams and Lexi Ramser, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Emily Reier and Betsy Muhlenkamp fell to Irene Ingle and Maranda Craighead 6-4, 6-2.

The Jay County junior varsity team won, 4-2..

Klarisa Hemmelgarn and Ashlyn May won their singles matches by a score of 8-0, and 6-1 respectively.

Katy Hamitlon and Sydney Baughman won their No. 1 doubles match 8-3. Kaitlyn Ruis and Janae Kirby teamed to beat Mariah Pinkerton and Claudia Vitz 8-6.



Rockets no-hit Jay

MODOC — The Jay County junior varsity softball team wasn’t able to muster a hit in a 3-2 loss in eight innings Thursday to the host Union Rockets.

Jay County (0-1) scored a run in each of the third and sixth innings despite not recording a hit. Union scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score, and won in walk-off fashion in the home half of the eighth.

Randi Ferguson suffered the loss. She struck out four and walked one.
