FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery baseball team lost its second game in a row with a 12-6 defeat to the Lima Shawnee Indians on Monday.
Shawnee grabbed a 4-0 lead after the third inning and scored twice in the top of the fourth before Fort Recovery (7-4) scored two runs in the home half of the frame. Shawnee, which is also the Indians, got ahead 10-3 in the sixth inning, and was out front 12-3 before the host Indians pushed across three runs in the seventh.
Nick Thwaits hit his second home run of the season, also adding a double and driving in two runs for Fort Recovery. Will Homan had three hits, including two doubles, as Cade Wendel and Reese Rogers also hit doubles. Ben Homan, Evan Post and Kody Shinaberry also had singles, and Joe Homan notched his first career hit.
Ethan Schoen suffered the loss. He allowed six runs — five earned — on six hits. He struck out one and walked one in 3 1/3 innings.
Stars hold on
BERNE — The South Adams baseball team scored three late runs and held on for a 10-8 victory over Southern Wells on Monday in a non-conference tilt.
The Starfires (4-4) gave up five runs in the top of the fourth inning, but responded with four more in the home half of the frame to tie the game at seven apiece.
Two innings later, South Adams scored three runs to lead 10-7, and the Raiders got within two in the top of the seventh before the Starfires prevented further damage for the win.
Nic Stuber had three singles and drove in two runs to lead South Adams. Corbin Blomeke had a double and a single, and Joe Stuber chipped in with two singles. Jayden Dull, Marcus Teeter and Braxton Haight all had singles.
Gilbert Lynch got the win on the bump. He scattered five hits, gave up three earned runs, walked two and struck out one in three innings of relief. Mark Clary started and lasted 3 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs — three earned — on four hits, walked three and struck out three.
SA golfers first
GENEVA — The South Adams boys golf team finished first on Monday as it hosted a four-team match at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
The Starfires had a team score of 191, finishing ahead of Adams Central (201), Heritage (211) and Woodlan (238).
David Muselman led the Starfires with a 39. Jake Rife was second on the team with 43, Eli Hamrick totaled 53 and J.D. Groh rounded out the team score with 56.
Nick Wurster shot a 58 but did not factor into the team score.
Stars sweep
WABASH — South Adam’s girls tennis team moved to 3-1 on the year with a 5-0 sweep of the host Southwood Knights on Monday.
All five matches lasted only two sets.
At No. 1 singles, Haley Gerber defeated Drue Gentry 6-1, 6-1, while Virginia Lagos lost Kim Hobson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Hannah Dull, the Starfires’ No. 3 singles player, knocked off Lorynn Hunt 7-5, 6-1.
South Adam’s No. 1 doubles team of Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau beat Hannah King and Brooke Wyatt 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Sydney Pierce and Breanna Potts defeated Mary Sieberns and Emily Gwillim 6-0, 6-1.
The Starfires junior varsity team also won, 7-3.
Katrina Fosnaugh, Jade Farlow and Cassie Yoder each won a pair of singles matches. Kate Buckingham and Fatima Sandoval teamed for a doubles victory.
Two set records
FORT RECOVERY — Kierra Wendel and Owen Moorman broke their own school records Monday, helping the Fort Recovery Middle School girls and boys track teams finish second in a three-team meet.
Fort Loramie swept both the girls and boys meets. The Redskin girls scored 102 points, ahead of Fort Recovery (48) and Parkway (seven). Fort Loramie’s boys totaled 65 points, Fort Recovery was three points behind and Parkway tallied 28 points.
Wendel won the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 2.2 seconds, beating her own mark by half a second. She also won the long jump.
Elena Evers also had two victories, winning shot put and discus.
Moorman finished the 200 dash in 24.8 seconds, 0.12 seconds faster than his previous school record. Moorman also won the 100 dash.
Derek Jutte (200 hurdles), Logan Homan (shot put) and Clark Knapke (discus) also won their respective events.
