FRANKTON — The Patriots had to switch up their lineup.

It resulted in the second win of the season.

Jay County High School’s girls tennis team moved to 2-3 on the season Thursday with a 3-2 win over the Frankton Eagles.

Making her varsity debut, Klarisa Hemmelgarn defeated Chloe Simon at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

The Patriots swept the doubles matches to earn the match victory. Emily Reier and Kayla Dirksen defeated Katie Finney and Ciara Lefdahl 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Francine Muhlenkamp and Sydney Baughman teamed to knock off Taylor Cawthorn and Aaliyah Morrison 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Audrey Dirksen made her singles debut and lost to Emma Noble at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-0, and Megan Johnson dropped her No. 2 singles match 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 4-1. Katy Hamilton and Dawn Minnick got wins in their respective singles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Katilyn Ruiz and Janae Kirby got a victory, while Theresa Romero joined Carissa Mercer for a No. 3 doubles win.



Augsburger shines

FORT WAYNE — Katelin Augsburger was at it again Tuesday, striking out a career-high 18 in leading the South Adams softball team to a 2-0 victory over the host Homestead Spartans.

Augsburger, who walked five and only allowed a fourth-inning double, struck out all three Homestead batters in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, including a stretch of six consecutive punch outs from the fifth through seventh innings.

South Adams (8-0), which is ranked ninth in Class 2A, broke open a scoreless game by tallying the only two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Morgan Alberson led off the inning with a bunt single, and later scored on a double from Taylor Augsburger. Anna Nussbaum alter scored as a courtesy runner for Augsburger.

Lexi Dellinger, Taylor Augsburger and Alberson each had two hits for the Starfires.



Start lifts Tribe

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — A three-run first inning was all the Fort Recovery baseball team needed in a 7-2 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals on Tuesday.

Ben Homan grounded out in the first inning, and the Indians (8-4, 2-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) added two more runs on a pair of defensive mishaps. The Indians scored a run in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings for a 7-0 lead, and the Cardinals (8-5, 1-2 MAC) pushed across two runs in the home half of the seventh inning.

Will Homan led the Indians with a double and two singles while driving in a run. Ben Homan and Cade Wendel each had two hits. Evan Post and Kody Shinaberry each had singles, while Reese Rogers had two RBIs without notching a hit.

Shinaberry had three stolen bases, leading an Tribe offense that swiped a dozen bags total.

Wendel pitched five strong innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight to get the win.



Knights top Jay

OSSIAN — Jay County’s baseball team gave up at least a run in all but one inning Tuesday in an 8-3 loss to the host Norwell Knights.

The Class 3A No. 9 Knights scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second for a 3-0 advantage. Two innings later, Norwell pushed its lead to 5-0 before Jay County (3-3) pushed across two runs. But the Knights answered with one run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to lead 8-2. Jay County put up a run in the seventh but wasn’t able to get any closer.

Cole Stigleman had a single and drove in two runs for the Patriots.

Payton Heniser hit a double, and Ryan Schlechty, Max Moser and Michael Schlechty each had singles.

Ryan Schlechty suffered the loss, giving up five runs — four earned — and one walk while striking out three and scattering five hits over four innings.

Former Patriot Levi Long had one RBI for the Knights.



Indians no-hit

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery softball team wasn’t able to get a hit Tuesday in a 10-0 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals in six innings.

New Bremen (11-1, 3-0 Midwest Athletic Conference), which is ranked fourth in Division IV, scored four runs in the fourth inning before tacking on two more in the fifth. The Cardinals tallied four more runs in the top of the sixth, and kept the Indians (3-7, 1-1 MAC) off the scoreboard in the home half of the frame for the run-rule victory.

The Indians committed six errors in the loss.

Taylor Thien walked as the only FRHS runner to reach base.

Devin Post took the loss pitching. She gave up nine runs — six earned — on eight hits, while striking out four and walking two in five innings.



SA tennis wins

BERNE — South Adams’ girls tennis team picked up a 3-2 victory over Muncie Central on Tuesday.

Virginia Lagos earned the only singles victory for the Starfires (4-1), defeating Tara Host at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau beat Chloe Townsend and Virginia Wilhoite 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles team of Sydney Pierce and Breanna Potts knocked off Kelby Staling and Megan Clifford 6-0, 6-3.

Haley Gerber dropped her No. 1 doubles match to Erin Smith 5-7, 6-1, 10-8, and at No. 3 singles Hannah Dull lost to Rachael Hill 6-4, 6-3.



Late run sinks FR

FORT RECOVERY — A run in the top of the seventh inning sank Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team in a 2-1 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals.

After allowing one run in the fifth inning, Fort Recovery tied the score with a run in the home half of the sixth. But the Cardinals pushed across a run in the top of the seventh and the Indians weren’t able to tie the score once again.

Joe Homan had two singles to lead the Indians. Ian Homan hit a double and drove in a run, and Drew Muhlenkamp chipped in a single.

Garrett Faller suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking one in seven innings.
