WOODBURN — The Patriots were on the verge of a losing streak.
A victory over a conference opponent got them back in the win column.
Jay County High School’s softball team opened Allen County Athletic Conference play on Friday with a 7-5 victory over the host Woodlan Warriors.
The Patriots (3-4, 1-0 ACAC), who had lost their previous two games, had a 2-1 advantage after the second inning but fell behind 4-3 heading into the sixth inning. Jay County pushed across three runs to take a 6-4 lead, and both teams scored a run in the seventh inning.
Katie Carpenter went 4-for-4 at the plate, as Emily Corn followed with three hits. Catera Gierhart smacked a two-run double, while Gwen Butcher tallied a pair of singles.
Sam Twigg, Kady Finnerty and Chloe Trissel also added hits.
Butcher got the win on the mound, improving to 2-2 on the year.
Jay boys eighth
MUNCIE — Jay County’s boys track team finished last out of eight teams at the Muncie Central Relays on Saturday.
Anderson won with 110 points, finishing ahead of Huntington North (101) and Yorktown (79.5). Jay County totaled 23.5 points.
Andrew Trewyn earned the best finish for the Patriots as he finished second in high jump with a height of 6 feet. Kyle Willis of Delta beat Trewyn by 2 inches. JCHS sophomore Gavin Randall cleared 5 feet, 8 inches, to tie for fourth.
Trewyn was also fifth in shot put with a distance of 40 feet, 4 inches.
Noah Harris had a time of 45.46 seconds to finish seventh in 300-meter hurdles. Isaac Robbins was 10th in 45.99 seconds.
Cole Watson, Logan Duran and Matthew Paquette joined Nick Neal to finish seventh in the 4x100 relay in 50.63, and teamed with Gavin Randall to place eighth in the sprint medley relay in 1:50.4.
The distance medley relay team of Candler Hedges, Tyler Leonhard, Tayler Smeltzer and Alex LeMaster was seventh in 13 minutes, 13.4 seconds.
Hill 5th at regional
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Halle Hill finished fifth on balance beam in the USA Gymnastics Region 5 meet on Sunday at Kellogg Arena.
Hill, a Jay County High School freshman, earned 9.35 on beam for her highest score of the day. She placed 12th on vault with a score of 9.2, and added a 9.275 on floor exercise. Hill earned 8.025 on uneven bars for an all-around score of 35.850.
