GENEVA — The Starfires and Patriots both performed better than they did a day earlier.

They just weren’t able to move up any spots in the team standings.

The South Adams and Jay County high school girls golf teams finished fourth and seventh respectively Wednesday in the South Adams Invitational at Golf Club of the Limberlost.

It was the second consecutive day the Starfires and Patriots held those spots.

“(They’re) showing some improvement,” said JCHS coach Butch Gray, whose team shot an even 500, which was 23 strokes better than the Bellmont Invitational on Tuesday. “I know late in the round, as I watched them, they became mentally — and it played into them physically — fatigued.

“They were ready to be done when 18 (holes) was done.”

Bellmont stayed strong yet again, opening its season with back-to-back invitational titles. The Squaws totaled 397, edging runner-up Heritage by six strokes. The Eastbrook Panthers were third with 419.

“We didn’t improve as much this time as we did last year,” said SAHS coach Seth Sprunger, whose team also shaved 23 strokes off its total from the day before. “We’re improving and we’ve got two girls on the team that had very little to no varsity experience, in particular, 18-hole varsity experience.”

All five Starfire golfers lowered their scores from Tuesday. Kaiti Gorrell, the team’s top player, shaved five strokes off her score to shoot 96 to finish seventh overall. Her round included making par on the sixth and ninth holes.

Becah Schwartz took off two strokes to finish with 103 as she was 12th overall for the second consecutive tournament. Allyson Schwartz showed the biggest drop in score from one day to the next. She trimmed six strokes off Tuesday’s score to total 111, which was third on the team.

Shayla Welch, the only member of the team not a senior, closed out the team score for South Adams with 116, which was three strokes better than the first tournament of her varsity career.

“As long as scores go down that is what we are looking for,” Sprunger said. “Between today and yesterday I noticed all scores going down. It wasn’t just us.”

Sprunger noted the drop in score of Gray’s Patriot squad, which had three of its four scoring members shoot better than the previous day.

Sophomore Makenzie Parks made her debut as Jay County’s No. 1 player after she shot 112 a day earlier from the No. 2 spot. She led the Patriots on Wednesday with a career-best 108.

Madalyn Garringer switched places with Parks, and was more comfortable not playing as the team’s top player. The junior showed the most improvement on the team from one day to the next, taking off 26 strokes from Tuesday to shoot 110, a new career best.

“She was (at a different) comfort level today,” Gray said, noting she was paired with a familiar face in Bluffton’s Olivia Johnson.

Eden Basford, also a Jay County sophomore, was third on the team with 135, a total four strokes better than when she made her varsity debut.

Playing in her first varsity round, junior Sierra Caster totaled 147 to complete the Patriots’ team total.

Still with a youthful team in terms of experience, Gray said practice over the next few days and just putting in more time on the course should help the Patriots moving forward.

“They just have to get out and play,” he said. “(Thursday) we’ll work on the (driving) range, chipping and putting.

“For the most part, very happy. Majority of the girls have not played 18-hole matches.”

While Sprunger was pleased with the lower scores his team put up, he knows the defending Allen County Athletic Conference tournament champion has its work cut out if it hopes to win for the second year in a row.

“Heritage played really well here and they’re ready to come in and try to make a statement here on Monday,” Sprunger said. The Starfires host both Jay County and Heritage at 10 a.m. Monday to open ACAC round-robin play. “We are going to have to do a little better than we did today.”

Also competing but not factoring into the team scores were Clair Sutton (123) for South Adams and Raquel Wehrly (150) for Jay County.
