MUNCIE — The Patriots picked up their first win of the season.
They had trouble getting the second.
Jay County High School's boys tennis team finished third Saturday in the Muncie Central Invitational.
The Mt. Vernon Marauders went undefeated to win the four-team tournament. The host Bearcats were 2-1 to finish second, and the Blackford Bruins were winless to place fourth.
Jay County swept the Bruins 5-0 in their first match of the day before consecutive 4-1 losses to the Marauders and Bearcats.
At No. 1 singles, Garrett Rodgers went 2-1, including a 6-4, 6-1 win over Blackford’s Straton Stone and a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Mt. Vernon’s J.D. Cohee.
The Patriots’ No. 2 doubles team of Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall also went 2-1. It knocked off Jerret Barker and Kyle Price of Blackford by a 6-4, 6-2 score, and defeated Zach Abrell and Tyler Walker of Muncie Central 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.
Against the Bruins, Payton Heniser defeated Dylan Funkhouser 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Conner Benter swept Myles Cline 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Ethan Myers and Xavier Ninde won their No. 1 doubles match 7-5, 6-4, 10-4.
Fort freshmen win
ST. HENRY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team won its first match of the season on Saturday, sweeping the St. Henry Redskins 25-8, 25-7.
Ashlyn Bechtol led Fort Recovery (1-1) with four kills. Hope Wendel and Maria Hartings were second on the team with two apiece.
Brenna Homan led the team in both digs (seven) and aces (four). Hartings added four digs, while Kendra Dues and Wendel had three digs apiece. Ava Bubp and Wendel notched two aces each.
East Jay sweeps
DECATUR — The East Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams both defeated Bellmont on Thursday.
The Chief girls had five of the top six spots in scoring 18 points. Bellmont totaled 43 points.
East Jay’s boys edged the Braves, 27-29.
Lydia Keihn paced the girls race, winning with a time of 12 minutes, 31 seconds. Mara Bader was the runner-up in 13:03, and Rachel Heitkamp was 50 seconds behind her in fourth. Lindy Wood finished fifth in 14:00, and Emily Dues placed sixth in 14:01.
Camron Clark placed second for the EJMS boys in 11:59. Tony Wood was fourth in 12:02, Dustin Harris finished in 12:13 for fifth, and Sebastian Solis had a time of 12:29 for seventh. Nico Minnich rounded out the team total in ninth with a time of 12:40.
