Patriots open with victories

BLUFFTON — The middle school Patriots made relatively easy work of the Tigers in their inaugural game.
The Jay County Middle School Patriots football teams opened their first season with victories over the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth grade squad won 22-12, and the seventh graders earned a 14-0 win in two quarters of play.
Quinn Faulkner and Tarron Bentz both had first-half rushing touchdowns for the eighth graders (1-0). Faulkner also picked off a pass in the second half and took it 75 yards for a touchdown.
Bentz eclipsed the 100-yard mark in rushing yards.
Kaden Ridenour and Mason Ludy both scored on the ground for the Patriot seventh graders (1-0). Caden Phenis and Dawson Hundley both recovered fumbles.
Tribe sweep Jays
DELPHOS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams swept the host St. John’s Blue Jays on Tuesday.
The eighth grade Indians won 25-8, 25-19, while the seventh graders won 25-16, 25-15.
Melissa Laux and Marissa Gaerke had two kills each to lead the FRMS eighth graders (3-0, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference). Emma Kahlig, Shelby Acheson, Lilie Leuthold and Gaerke had three digs each. Grace Guggenbiller’s six aces were tops on the team.
Brookelyn Jutte notched three kills to lead the seventh grade team (3-0, 1-0 MAC). Sophie Pearson and Faith Wendel had two assists apiece, and Abby Knapke totaled four digs. Audra Bubp, Allysen Fullenkamp and Wendel all had six service points.
Chiefs beat Indians
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team opened its season Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-11 victory over the Mississinewa Indians.
Madison Dirksen led East Jay with five kills. Kylie Klopfenstein and Lilly Hedges notched three kills apiece, while Lindy Mercer and Ralyn Chaffins had two kills apiece.
Klopfenstein had four digs, while Dirksen and Hedges led the team with two aces.
Maddy Wenk recorded nine assists to go with her eight service points.
