DELPHOS, Ohio — Kiah Wendel barely missed.

She helped her team to its third straight win.

Wendel, a Fort Recovery High School senior, finished with 17 points Thursday in leading the Tribe girls basketball team to a 51-35 win over the host St. John’s Blue Jays.

Fort Recovery (4-1, 2-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) trailed 10-6 after the first quarter but exploded for 16 points in the second quarter for a 22-16 advantage at half. In the final eight minutes, the Indians continued to pull away with 10 and 19 points respectively in the third and fourth quarters.

Wendel was 7-of-10 from the field and made two of her free-throw attempts. She also had three rebounds and an assist. Val Muhlenkamp notched a dozen points to go with her 10 rebounds, and Carley Stone chipped in 11 points.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team dominated St. John’s, 38-11. Brenna Homan and Hope Wendel led the way with eight points each. Lydia Wenning contributed six points.

 
Knights top Stars

BERNE —  The South Adams swim teams both lost to the Norwell Knights on Thursday.

The Starfires’ girls lost 91-88, while the boys fell 97-86.

Olivia Von Gunten and Ashley LeFever both had a pair of race wins for the SAHS girls. Von Gunten was first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 13.75 seconds, and had a time of 1:02.53 to win the 100 butterfly. LeFever won the 50 and 100 freestyle races in 25.37 and 54.15 seconds respectively.

Bella Baily had a time of 2:26.59 to finish first in the 200 individual medley, and Julia Grabau totaled 139.25 points to win diving.

Zach Colpaert, Kam Yoder and Trey Lehman had the only individual wins for the SAHS boys. Colpaert won both the 50 freestyle (22.7 seconds) and 100 freestyle (55.52 seconds). Yoder won the 100 butterfly (1:00.96) and Lehman had the top spot in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.33.



C team loses

MUNCIE — Jay County’s boys basketball C team dipped to 1-4 on the year Thursday with a 42-31 loss to Muncie Central.

The Patriots fell behind 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and the deficit ballooned to 26-10 at halftime. Jay County trailed 38-18 heading to the fourth before outscoring the Bearcats 13-4 in the final period.

Conner Tout paced the Patriots with 15 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Gavin Lambert scored seven points, Peyton Nichols contributed five points and Sheldon Upp tallied four points.



Chiefs blast Raiders

The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both blasted the Southern Wells Raiders on Thursday.

East Jay’s seventh grade squad won 44-14, and the eighth graders had a 37-8 victory.

Renna Schwieterman poured in 25 points for the seventh grade Chiefs. Olivia Waters tallied eight points and Lydia Keihn had six points while Laci McGinnis and Eden Abshire added two points.

Madison Dirksen’s 12 points paced the eighth graders. Heaven Hambrock followed with eight points as Rachel Muhlenkamp and Andrea Jutte finished with six points apiece. Maddy Wenk totaled five points.



EJ boys win

PONETO — East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both defeated the host Southern Wells Raiders on Thursday.

The eighth grade squad won 51-12 while the seventh graders picked up a 40-27 win.

Gavin Muhlenkamp tallied 11 points for the eighth grade Chiefs (7-1, 3-1 Allen County Athletic Conference), who got seven points from Kyle Sanders. Ethan Dirksen and Hunter Chapman chipped in six points each while Crosby Heniser and Shawn Fisher both had five points.

Bennett Weitzel tallied 17 points for the EJMS seventh graders (6-2, 4-0 ACAC). Josh Dowlen and Carter Link pitched in eight and seven points respectively.



Stars beat Rebels

LYNN — The South Adams seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams traveled to Randolph Southern on Thursday and each returned with wins.

The SAMS seventh graders won 29-25, and the eighth graders picked up a 33-21 win.

Matt Steiner totaled nine points for the sevneth graders, which also got seven points from Brady Beal, five from Kyle Minger and four from Josh Amstutz.

Trey Schoch starred in the eighth grade game by leading the way with 15 points. Aidan Wanner totaled 11 points.
