FORT RECOVERY — When the Indians and Patriots meet on the hardwood, it can best be described as a boxing match.
Give a couple blows and take a couple, too.
It all comes down to who can deliver, and withstand, the most.
The Indians connected in the first quarter. The Patriots responded in the second. And after taking a bit to the chin in the fourth quarter, the Patriots battled back.
The Indians dodged a haymaker to hang on.
Cole Stigleman had his potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer drill the front of the rim as the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team hung on to beat state-line rival Jay County on Saturday, 46-44, at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“Hats off to them,” said FRHS coach Michael Bashore, whose team moved to 4-1 after suffering its first loss Friday to Delphos St. John’s. “Jay County really executes their stuff. They’re well-coached. They get after it. They were hard fought.
“They took our punch in the fourth quarter, came back in the second quarter and responded. It was a good ball game by two really good teams and I’m awful proud of my kids right now.”
Jay County (3-4), grabbed a defensive rebound on a Ryan Braun missedfree throw and promptly called timeout with 5.4 seconds remaining. Hoping to get the ball into Stigleman’s hands for a chance to tie, or win, the Patriots had to go the full length of the court.
Stigleman caught the inbound pass just inside midcourt and tried his best to get around Fort Recovery senior Cade Wendel, but wasn’t able to get completely free. Moving to his left, Stigleman took a 23-footer from the left wing for the win.
“Wanted Cole to get to the basket but Wendel is just a phenomenal defender and really strong,” JCHS coach Chris Krieg said. “Cole struggledgetting around him. He had a nice pull-up three, and to be honest, I thought it was going in.”
Stigleman, who already made both of his 3-pointers in the game on his way to a team-high 14 points, had a perfect shot. He had a bit of separation, his line was spot on. But he was short by the diameter of the ball.
“I thought that was a great shot,” Krieg said. “We got a great look at the basket to win the basketball game, we just fell a little short.”
Fort Recovery senior Ryan Braun and junior Payton Jutte helped the Indians fire the first blow in the opening quarter as they combined for 10 of the Tribe’s 14 first-quarter points. They both hit shots from outside and Braun had a pair of layups with two free throws.
The Schlechty twins, Ryan and Michael, led the way in the second period as Jay County fired back with its own blows. The Patriots trailed 14-3 after the opening quarter, and Michael Schlechty made a 3-pointer on a Stigleman assist to kick off the second.
A 10-2 run made it 16-13, and five straight from Ryan Schlechty got the Patriots within one, 19-18 with 3:34 to play. Each team managed only two points over the next two and a half minutes before Stigleman drained a 3-pointer from in front of the FRHS bench at the buzzer to give the Patriots a 23-21 halftime advantage. Ryan Schlechty finished with 11 points and brother had eight. Braun ended with 15 points.
“They came out and hit us hard,” Krieg said. “Then we came back and that second quarter was pretty much all of ours.”
After taking blows in the second quarter and weathering a storm in the third and early part of the fourth, Fort Recovery came up with a crucial run to retake the lead.
A quick four points to start the final quarter made it 39-32 Jay County, but that’s when Jutte took matters into his own hands. The junior sharpshooter made a layup, drew a foul and sank the subsequent free throw. Then he buried consecutive 3-pointers from the right wing to make it 41-39.
Jutte led all players with 25 points, all but six of which came in the second half.
“Just aggression,” Jutte said of the difference in his play between the first and second halves. He was 6-of-13 from behind the arc.
The next trip down the court, Braun got back into the action from long range to put the Tribe ahead by six before a layup to complete a 14-0 run with 2:45 to play.
Nearly knocked out, Jay County shook it off and scored five in a row, including a fast break slam by Wyatt Geesaman, to get back within two with 30 seconds to play.
“We knew they were going to come back with a storm,” Krieg said. “You have to weather the storm. I felt like we weathered it for a little while and they went on their run there.
“We got it back but we just ran out of time. We really did.”

Jay County limited Fort Recovery to just two points in the first quarter and was never outscored in the subsequent periods in a 48-32 victory.
The Patriots (5-2) led 14-2 after seven minutes of play and 23-7 at halftime. Both teams scored 13 and 12 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively.
Jay County’s Gabe Link drained five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 19 points. Gavin Randall contributedforu points while Gabe Faulkner and Noah Arbuckle had four points each.
Ethan Shoen and Dillan Evers led Fort Recovery with eight points each. Gavin Thobe, Brian Bihnand Ian Homan scored four pointes apiece.
