FORT WAYNE — The dream is dashed.

The new goal is winning the rest.

Jay County High School’s wrestling team went 3-2 Saturday at the Carroll Super Duals, putting an end to its goal of going undefeated in dual matches.

The Patriots (11-2) opened the tournament with wins against Northrop (52-28) and Elkhart Central (54-21) before losing to Carroll (52-16), which finished 16th in the most recent coaches poll. Jay County then defeated Eastside 45-30 before a 60-18 loss to Garrett.

Ian Liette, Kaimen Sanders, Thomas Hemmelgarn and Mason Winner were all 4-1 on the day. It was the first loss of the season for Winner.

Chandler Chapman, Mitchell Frasher and Gaven Hare all finished 3-2, while Dylan Racster, Jordan Schricker and Connor Davis each were 2-3.

Taylor Klarer and Zakk Atkins ended their day 1-4, Nathaniel Lykins was 1-2, Lucas Schmit finished 1-1 and Kaley Young was 1-0.

Jay County hosts the East Central Indiana Classic at 9 a.m. Saturday.



FR girls win

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls swim team finished first Saturday in a meet with the Minster Wildcats and New Bremen Cardinals.

Fort Recovery won nine events as it totaled 41 points. Minster scored 20 points and New Bremen had 18 points.

Cassy Martin, Alexis Bubp and Carley Stone each picked up two individual victories. Martin won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 8.9 seconds, and had a time of 5:52.71 to win the 500 freestyle. Bubp handled the 200 individual medley (2:27.37) and 100 butterfly (1:06.29), while Stone was first in the 50 freestyle (26.11 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:05.76).

Sophie Timmerman won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.15.


Paige Fortkamp, Stone, Timmerman and Alexis Bubp combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:59.56, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ava Bubp, Alexis Bubp, Forktamp and Stone earned a victory in 4:04.33.



Stars lose third straight

BERNE — South Adams’ boys basketball team lost its third straight game Saturday, 57-52, to the Parkway Panthers.

The Starfires (2-4), who host Fort Recovery on Tuesday to cap a four-game homestand, trailed 12-11 after the first quarter and were behind 31-29 at half.

South Adams pulled within one, 45-44, with eight minutes left to play before the Panthers had a 12-8 edge in scoring during the final period.

Nic Stuber had a game- and career-high 18 points in leading the Starfires. He also grabbed six rebounds, which was second on the team to Grant Besser’s eight. Besser also contributed 15 points, as he and Stuber combined to go 15-of-24 from the field. Brayden Gilbert also notched a career-high 10 points in the defeat.

Jack Wehe paced Parkway with 14 points.



SA wrestling goes 3-2

NEW CASTLE — The South Adams wrestling team went 3-2 Saturday in the New Castle Super 8 team dual tournament.

The Starfires defeated Wes-Del (51-27) and Northeastern (49-15) before suffering a 45-27 defeat to Centerville. South Adams bounced back with a 51-30 win against Hagerstown ahead of a 53-26 loss to Muncie Central.

Wyatt Miller and Tayler Cuellar both ended their respective days undefeated at 5-0. Michael Rupp, Christian Summersett and Austin McKibben were all 4-1, while Brandon Wynn, Korbin Dunnuck and Tommy Herman all finished 3-2.

Dylan Zurcher, Alex Sator and Collin Shaffer each went 1-4, and Carter Lewis was 1-2.
