State streak in jeopardy for former Patriot

JASPER — A fourth straight state berth for one former Patriot is in jeopardy.

Sydney Mathias, a senior at Vincennes Lincoln, is seeded fourth in two individual events and has the same seed in a relay after Thursday’s IHSAA swim sectional preliminaries at Jasper.

Mathias, who spent a year and a half swimming for Jay County before moving to Knox County during her sophomore season, is fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 2 minutes, 10.23 seconds. Madison Matheis of Jasper is the top seed for Saturday’s finals with a time of 2:05.40.

She is also fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.47 seconds. Jasper’s Emma Hopf is the top seed in 55.96 seconds.

The senior swam the backstroke leg of the Alices’ 200 medley relay team, joining Susan Skinner, Jenna Cummins and Jessi Donovan for a fourth seed in the event. Heritage Hills has the top seed in 2:00.93.

Mathias was the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay team along with Donovan, Cummins and Skinner. That group is seeded fifth at 1:50.83. Jasper has the top seed at 1:42.99.

As a freshman at Jay County, Mathias was part of the 400 freestyle relay team with Sophie Bader, Katy Smeltzer and Anne Vormohr that finished 26th in the state finals at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

She was part of the Alices’ 200 freestyle relay that was 27th in 2015 and 28th last year.
