FORT RECOVERY — Chris Guggenbiller will once again roam the sidelines Friday.
Guggenbiller, Fort Recovery High School’sboys basketball coach, was reinstated Wednesday night, Fort Recovery Local Schools superintendent Justin Firks said this morning via text message. The decision came after a special school board meeting to discuss an incident, which led to Guggenbiller being suspended, during the fourth quarter of the Tribe’s victory against the Parkway Panthers.
“Coach Guggenbiller was reinstated last evening and will resume full coaching duties,” Firks said.
Late in the fourth quarter of the Indians’ 61-50 victory Friday, Guggenbiller shouted at Payton Jutte after the sophomore fouled out with 2 minutes, 59 seconds, to play in a two-point game. Following the contest, Guggenbiller was confronted by Jutte’s father, Eric, who reportedly had to be escorted out of the gym.
Guggenbiller was suspended for Saturday’s victory over Mississinawa Valley and Tuesday’s loss to Greenville, with assistant Chris Bihn coaching in his absence.
“I’d just like to start off apologizing,” Guggenbiller said to the board and a crowd of more than 50 at Wednesday’s meeting. “First to the board of education, the Fort Recovery administration team, Fort Recovery community, my players, my assistant coaches and especially the Jutte family for my actions this past Friday night.
“They were out of character and they were not warranted for what took place. I wholeheartedly apologize, and you canbe rest assured it will not happen again.”
Seven other community members spoke in support of Guggenbiller during the 19-minute meeting, after which the school board went into executive session. Among those speaking were fans of the program, parents with children in the program, friends of Guggenbiller and one of his players.
“Being in the locker room after the game, I saw coach ‘Guggs,’ he was very sincere about what went on and his actions,” said Caleb Martin,a FRHS senior. “I look forward to getting coach ‘Guggs’ back soon.”
