WAPAKONETA, Ohio — It’s not always how you start, but how you finish.

After the Patriots cut the deficit to five points with slightly more than two minutes to play, Carley Stone scored on back-to-back possessions, helping the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball pull away from the Patrick Henry Patriots for a 48-38 in the Division III Elida District sectional final on Saturday at Wapakoneta.

“We were up more and we were getting more excited as we were hitting shots,” said Stone, who scored 11 of her game-high 21 points during the fourth quarter. “We started picking it up more.”

It came after the eighth-ranked Indians (19-3) and Patriots (14-8) both had trouble gaining control of the game through the first three-quarters.

“It was nice to finish the game the way we did,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose team advances to the district semifinal game against the Liberty-Benton Eagles at 8 p.m. Thursday in Elida. The Eagles, who defeated St. Henry 57-36 earlier in the evening, ended the Indians’ season in the district semifinal last season.

“I didn’t think we executed almost the whole three quarters, really,” Patch said. “We didn’t follow the game plan really well … We kind of forgot about that in the fourth quarter and I thought we played a lot better in the fourth quarter making plays.”

Jocelyn Kaiser, who was second on the Tribe with 16 points, hit a jumper on an assist from Grace Thien to start the fourth quarter, and after a Patrick Henry turnover Stone followed with an old-fashioned three-point play. A Kaiser basket with 3:18 to play put Fort Recovery on top 38-29, the biggest lead for either team to that point.

“It was nice to get a lead, get a little cushion and make them play behind because they didn’t have to do that much the whole game,” Patch said. “I also think it helped with our confidence. Also, some pressure was relieved from us at that point which was huge for our kids.”

Patrick Henry responded with 3-pointers — one each from Katie Wagner and Jessica Bastelman — on its next two possessions to cut the deficit to 40-35.

But that’s when Stone took over. She drove the right side of the lane for a basket to make it 42-35/ At the other end of the court she stole the ball at the free-throw line, split a pair of Patriots and went coast-to-coast for a fast-break layup and a 44-35 lead with 1:03 to play.

Stone, who finished with a game-high five steals, didn’t let the fact she picked up her fourth foul four minutes earlier have an impact on her defense.

“I was going after it,” she said. “I picked up a few quick fouls so I knew I had to back off a little bit, but I was still going full speed trying to get them turned over.”

Stone made four consecutive free throws in the final 38 seconds to put the game away.

“It felt so good because we knew we were finally in control,” Stone said. “We had control of the game. We knew we had to finish it.”

Wagner led the Patriots with 12 points, all of which were on 3-pointers. Courtney Rosebrook was second on the team with nine points and shared the game high of eight rebounds.

Patrick Henry got off to a hot start, leading 7-2 with nearly three minutes gone in the game, and later led 9-3. Fort Recovery closed the period on a 6-0 run thanks to four points from Stone and two from Whitney Will, who finished with six points.

After being tied at nine to start the second, a Stone 3-pointer from the right wing gave the Tribe a 15-11 advantage, which later turned into an 18-17 PHHS lead. But each team went into the locker room at halftime once again even on the scoreboard, this time at 19 apiece.

At intermission, Patch said he told his team despite not playing well that it was still in the game. He also wanted them to keep fighting, assuring them they would eventually pull away. Unfortunately it didn’t seem like it to start the third quarter as Wagner hit back-to-back triples to make it 25-19.

Fort Recovery responded with an 11-1 run that included an offensive rebound putback from freshman Brooke Kahlig, her only two points of the game.

Thien drained a 3-pointer from the left corner on a Stone assist with 2:38 left in the third to give the Indians a 28-26 lead and they never trailed again.

As it struggled to gain control of the game for the better part of three quarters, Fort Recovery stayed resilient throughout, not getting let down despite missing some shots and being behind on the scoreboard. It’s that grit Patch said the Tribe needs in order to compete with Liberty-Benton, which is tied in the state poll with the Indians.

“Really it comes down to toughness plays in tournament,” he said. “Not beating yourself and being able to make toughness plays.’
