NEW HAVEN — The Patriots got their first tournament win of the season in late December.

On Saturday, they won their first team title of 2017.

Mason Winner and Gaven Hare both won individual championships in leading the Jay County High School wrestling team to the team title at the Bill Kerbel Invitational.

The Patriots, who won the East Central Indiana Classic they hosted on Dec. 23, totaled 176 points to edge Homestead by 1.5. Host New Haven was third with 166 points.

Winner, a 145-pound freshman, defeated Brady Wyro of Homestead by a 5-1 decision in his championship match. The victory pushed his season record to 18-1.

Hare, a 220-pound junior, beat Columbia City’s Jacob Elkins 7-2 to win his title in moving to 22-3 on the year.

Winner and Hare also placed first at their respective weight classes in the ECIC.

Senior Ivan Hemmelgarn finished second at 170 pounds, with classmate Tyler Leonhard taking third at 152. Leonhard’s victory in the third-place match was his 100th-career win. Nick Lykins placed fourth at 132, Seth Fugiett was fifth at 120 and Zakk Atkins (113) and Max Schmit (195) were both sixth.



Tribe wins again

VAN WERT, Ohio — Three players scored in double figures Saturday as the Fort Recovery girls basketball team defeated Van Wert, 49-28.

It pushed the Indians’ season-opening winning streak to eight games.

Fort Recovery jumped out to a 15-4 advantage and led 29-9 at halftime. The margin stayed the same heading to the fourth quarter, during which the Indians led by as many as 30 with 4:07 to play.

Jocelyn Kaiser led all players with 16 points, and Grace Thien made four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points. Both led the team with six rebounds.

Whitney Will contributed 13 points and three rebounds. Carley Stone and Kaiser had three steals apiece.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 20-11, in one half of play. Val Muhlenkamp had a game-high nine points, and Olivia Patch chipped in four points.



FR holds off Lancers

VAN WERT, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team held off a late surge by the host Lincolnview Lancers on Saturday in a 72-59 victory.

The Indians (6-1) led 19-12 before pushing the advantage to 41-22 at half. A 18-12 margin put the Tribe ahead 59-34 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lancers outscored the Indians, who never trailed in the game, 25-13 in the final period but had the rally fall short.

Micaiah Cox registered a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. He was 10-for-14 from the field and made four of his five free throws. Matt Bihn was 3-for-3 from 3-point range and finished with 19 points. Travis Sutter and Payton Jutte both scored seven points, Ryan Braun tallied six points while Caleb Martin and Jason Roessner chipped in four points apiece.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team fell to the Lancers, 47-35. Noah Lennartz and Will Homan had eight points each for the Indians.



FRMS boys split

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams split with the Arcanum Trojans on Saturday morning.

The Tribe eighth graders won, 51-20, and the seventh graders fell 43-15.

Clay Schmitz poured in 16 points to lead the FRMS eighth graders. Regan Martin and Brian Bihn scored nine points each, while Derek Jutte tallied six points. Riley Will also chipped in offensively by scoring five points.

Logan Homan’s six points led the seventh grade Indians. Marcus Gaerke had three points, with Sam DuHamel, Riley Hiser and Christian Jones adding two points each.



Jay places ninth

FRANKLIN — Jay County’s elementary wrestling team finished ninth Sunday in the Indiana State Wrestling Association dual team state at Franklin Community High School.

Jay County opened the tournament with a win over Franklin Community (45-42) before losing to Seymour (51-40) and Penn (61-22). In the consolation bracket, Jay County defeated Warren Central 49-40 before knocking off Roncalli 47-36 in the ninth-place match.

Edgar Decker and Mason Ludy were both undefeated on the day, going 5-0 and 4-0 respectively. Ludy won all his matches by pin. Austin Christner and Bryce Wenk were both 4-1, while Memphis Torre, Tony Wood, Bradin Daniels and Cody Rowles were all 3-2.
