PONETO — The West Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams picked up wins against the host Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.
The eighth grade Eagles defeated the Allen County Athletic Conference rival Raiders 38-7, while the seventh graders picked up a 35-26 victory.
Jaron Alexander led the offensive effort for the West Jay eighth graders by scoring 11 points. Ashton Kuss and Logan Brown both scored five points in support of Alexander. Lane Chapman, Lewis Crump and Hunter Shumaker chipped in three points apiece.
Camdin Harrison tallied 11 points to pace the seventh grade squad. Quinn Faulkner was second on the team with nine points, and Trenton Alexander, Nick Street and Aaron Yates recorded five points each.
Chiefs fall to Eagles
MUNCIE — East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams lost to the host Delta Eagles on Tuesday.
The seventh grade Chiefs lost 39-28, while the eighth grade squad was at the wrong end of a 50-10 score.
Ethan Dirksen led the EJMS seventh graders with 16 points in the losing effort. Gavin Myers chipped in five points, Adam Muhlenkamp scored four points and Gavin Muhlenkamp tallied three.
Bailey Cox had four points for the eighth grade Chiefs, who also got two points apiece from Brody Auker, Landon Grimes and Brian Zhang.
The seventh graders fall to 11-3, and the eighth graders dropped to 8-6.
Girls sweep Bruins
East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both defeated the Blackford Bruins on Tuesday.
The eighth grade squad had two players score in double figures for its 40-35 victory. East Jay’s seventh graders picked up a 28-12 win.
Natalie Miles and Alana Kunkler scored 14 and 12 points respectively for the eighth grade team. Grace Saxman followed with six points and Ana Heath had four points. Pacie Denney and Aubrey Schwieterman scored two points each.
Madison Dirksen scored 16 points to lead the seventh grade Chiefs. Heaven Hambrock notched six points, Andrea Jutte had four points and Rachel Muhlenkamp tallied two points.
Tigers sweep Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams were both within a possession or two of tying the score but fell short against the Versailles Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth graders lost 29-27, and the seventh grade Tribe lost 19-15.
Hope Wendel scored 10 points to lead the FRMS eighth graders. Kierra Wendel and Alli Vaughn chipped in six points, and Paige Fortkamp completed the scoring with four points.
Aubrey Knapke’s seven points paced the seventh grade squad. Faith Grube tallied three points, and Grace Guggenbiller and Emma Kahlig scored two points each. Marissa Gaerke added a free throw.
Chiefs blast Panthers
Renna Schwieterman eclipsed the 20-point plateau in leading the East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team to a 42-12 victory over the Muncie Southside Panthers.
Schwieterman poured in 25 points while sharing the game high of four rebounds with Olivia Waters, who scored 13 points herself. Eden Abshire and Natasha Toland had two points each.
Kylie Cross, Laci McGinnis and Madison Brunswick had three rebounds apiece, while Waters led the team with nine steals and five assists.
East Jay wins in OT
The East Jay sixth grade boys basketball team edged the Muncie Southside Panthers in overtime on Tuesday, 45-41.
Bennett Weitzel poured in 16 points for the Chiefs, who also got nine points from Blake Bogenschutz, eight from Josh Dowlen and five points from Peter Muhlenkamp. Dusty Pearson followed with four points, Simon Dirksen had two points and Carter Link chipped in one point.
WJ grounds Rockets
MODOC — West Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball team earned a 22-13 victory Tuesday over the host Union Rockets.
Skyler Bee and Spencer Caldwell each scored six points to lead the Eagles, who got their first win of the season to move to 1-3.
Landon Lowe followed with four points while Tavin Wasson chipped in three points. Gabe Goodspeed contributed two points and Peyton Bennett had one point.
