ARCADIA — Two weeks after becoming one of the first regional champions in history, Kyndal Huey etched herself as one of the best in the state.
Huey, a Jay County High School senior, finished third at 106 pounds Friday in the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling state finals at Hamilton Heights.
Teammate Jade Zorn finished fourth in the 113-pound weight division.
Huey pinned Jaylyn Lawrence of Madison Consolidated 3 minutes, 47 seconds, into their opening-round match, before losing to eventual state champion Markaela Pugh of Hamilton Heights in the first period of the semifinal.
The JCHS senior then pinned Lah Partin of Madison Consolidated in 1:24, and needed 2:51 to pin Emma Mensendiek of Columbus East in the third-place match.
Zorn was pinned in her opening-round match against Annalyse Dooley of West Vigo. She then beat Terre Haute South’s Jaryn Strong by 8-4 decision and knocked off River Forest’s Keara Wisek by a 7-5 decision before a 6-3 loss to Dooley in the third-place match.
Huey and Zorn combined to give Jay County 12 team points for 13th place out of 44 teams. Penn won the tournament with 67 points, followed by Hamilton Heights (27) and Richmond (25).
Gymnasts fourth
KOKOMO — Karlie Bullard set four new career best scores Saturday as the Jay County gymnastics team finished fourth in the Northwestern Invitational.
The host Tigers won the team title with a team score of 101.525. Noblesville scored 96.475 to edge Logansport by one tenth of a point. Jay County totaled 91.4.
Bullard placed third on floor exercise with a career best score of 8.675. She also added fourth-place finishes on vault (8.625), balance beam (8.4) and all around (33.25), all of which were career-best scores as well. Bullard added a 7.55 on uneven bars.
Rachel Louck’s 30.05 all around total was second on the team. She scored 9.125 on vault, 8.0 on floor, 7.55 on beam and 6.375 on bars. Riley Leavell was third on the team in all around with 26.95, earning 7.55 on vault. 7.525 on floor, 6.25 on bars and 5.6 on beam.
Justice Day completed the team score with an all around total of 24.075, a new career best. She had a 7.675 on vault, 6.1 on beam, 6.775 on floor and 3.525 on bars.
Mariah Salinas also competed, and she earned a 6.9 on vault and 3.7 on beam.
Chiefs win title
East Jay Middle School’s sixth grade girls basketball team won the invitational it hosted on Saturday.
The Chiefs defeated Selma in the first round 40-16 before disposing of Muncie Northside 39-20 in the final.
Olivia Waters led the offensive effort with 35 total points, including 22 against Selma. Renna Schwieterman had a dozen points in the opener and followed with 14 points in the title game. Eden Abshire totaled eight points and Lydia Keihn had four points.
