East Jay wins tourney opener

The Chiefs are headed to the second round.

East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams opened the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament Monday by defeating the Woodlan Warriors.

The seventh graders won 38-27, and the eighth grade team earned a 31-20 victory.

Gaven Muhlenkamp paced the seventh grade squad, pouring in 17 points. Ethan Dirksen provided eight points in support, with Darius Esparza contributing five points. Gavin Myers, Crosby Heniser, Adrek Pogue and Colton Walker had two points apiece.

Landon Grimes led the EJMS eighth graders with 13 points, and Cameron Langenkamp joined him in double figures with 10 points. Bailey Cox and Griffin Mann had three points each, with Nick Fields adding two points.



EJ girls sweep

The East Jay seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both picked up wins against the Woodlan Warriors in the opening round of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament Monday.

The Chief eighth graders won 38-30, and the seventh grade squad picked up a 21-9 win.

Natalie Miles poured in 19 points for the eighth graders, who got eight points from Grace Saxman, six from Alana Kunkler and five points from Aubrie Schwieterman.

Madison Dirksen led the way for the EJMS eighth graders, scoring nine points. Andrea Jutte and Heaven Hambrock pitched in four points, with Rachel Muhlenkamp and Maddie Wenk tallying two points each.



Stars top Eagles

The South Adams seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams defeated the West Jay Eagles in the opening round of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament Monday.

The Starfires’ seventh grade team needed two overtimes for its 39-35 victory, while the eighth graders won 45-36.

Quinn Faulkner had a valiant 16-point effort for the West Jay seventh graders in the defeat. Trenton Alexander scored 11 points to join him in double figures, while Camdin Harrison and Nick Street contributed five and three points each.

Logan Brown scored a dozen points to lead West Jay’s eighth graders. Luke Haggard followed with nine points, and Ashton Kuss scored five points. Riley Foster tallied four points, with Jaren Alexander and Hunter Shumaker scoring three points apiece.



Eagle girls fall

West Jay’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams lost to South Adams on Monday in the opening round of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament.

The Eagles eighth graders lost 29-8, and the seventh grade squad fell 32-18.

Haley Gillette, Sophia Fugiett, Ashlyn Denney and Demi Grove scored two points each for the eighth graders.

Isabel Rodgers scored 16 points in the defeat for the seventh graders. Kaelyn Denney chipped in two points.



Chief wrestlers win

East Jay’s wrestling team picked up a 58-14 victory over the Winchester Golden Falcons on Monday.

Blayne Daniels, Ian Ruiz, Mason Ludy, Kadin Ridenour and Ramon Bravo each won their respective matches by pin.

Dyllan Garringer, Jayden Maymi, Max LeMaster, Ryan Herring, RJ Lennartz and Dakota Lairson all earned forfeits.

In exhibition matches, Lita Chowning, Zach Brotherton and Lairson earned pins. Presley Kunkle and Cameron Lawhead earned wins by decision.



Tribe, Bulldogs split

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams split with the Celina Bulldogs on Monday.

The eighth grade Indians won 35-16, and the eighth graders fell 32-16.

Clay Schmitz scored 17 points to lead the eighth grade Indians, who got eight points from Derek Jutte, three each from Regan Martin and Brian Bihn as well as two points from Cobe Wendel and Riley Will.

Logan Homan scored six points for the seventh grade Tribe in the loss. Owen Jutte tallied four points, Marcus Gaerke contributed three points, Riley Hiser scored two points and Peyton Brunswick had one point.



WJ 6th falls

SELMA — West Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball teams were both defeated by the Selma Raiders on Monday.

The A team lost 67-19, and the B squad fell 32-6.

Skyler Bee scored eight points to lead the A squad. Gabe Goodspeed followed with five points, Dom Newsome and Tavin Watson both had two points while Landon Lowe and Spencer Caldwell each added one point.

In the B game, Goodspeed scored all six points.
