FORT RECOVERY — The Indians spent three quarters building a 20-point lead.

It almost fell apart in the final eight minutes.

But the defense buckled down in the closing minutes and their offense found its groove again.

The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team had four players score in double figures and held off a late rally to defeat the Marion Local Flyers on Thursday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

“Our kids get too relaxed,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose Division III No. 6 Indians move to 12-1 and 3-1 in Midwest Athletic Conference play. “We work hard to build a lead. Then we just get sloppy, we put it on cruise control.

“That is the biggest thing we can’t do. We can’t get relaxed. … We have to learn that when you’re up, you have to basically go forward and bury teams instead of letting teams back in the game like that.”

Marion Local (9-8, 3-3 MAC) trailed the Indians 49-29 heading into the fourth quarter, during which it was finally able to find its shot from the field. The Flyers were 7-for-14 in the final eight minutes after going 7-for-24 in the first three quarters.

Macey Griesdorn started the Flyers’ fourth quarter with a 3-pointer from the left corner, and the next time down the court Chloe Bertke hit a jumper to make it 51-34. Sarah Fesenmyer and Griesdorn combined for five consecutive points later in the period to trim the margin to 53-39, and another five points — a layup from Kara Evers and a Bertke 3-pointer — cut the Flyers’ deficit to single digits, 55-46, with 2:30 to play.
That’s when MLHS coach Beth Streib called a timeout.

Patch took advantage of the break too, to calm his players down.

“We had told them, one, we can’t keep putting ourselves in this position,” said Patch, whose team had a 14-point lead at halftime against Versailles but eventually lost to the third-ranked Tigers. “We let up. We can’t be doing that. Good teams finish teams off. They don’t limp across the finish line and it kind of felt like we limped across the finish line tonight.”

Fort Recovery’s defense tightened up in the final 150 seconds by not allowing the Flyers to score again. The Indians, meanwhile, tallied the final eight points — a pair of free throws from Carley Stone, a basket from Whitney Will and consecutive layups from Kiah Wendel.

Will, who has committed to play for the University of Saint Francis, finished with a game-high 19 points. Grace Thien was second on the team with 15 points, including a 4-for-6 effort from behind the 3-point line. Jocelyn Kaiser, a Capital University commit, chipped in 14 points and Stone added 11.

“When you can have four people in double digits that is a good sign,” said Patch, noting the shooting performance of Thien despite her teammates not being able to find her during the fourth quarter. “That was good to see because that means we are sharing the ball and we are moving it.

“At the same time we have to be smarter to know when that person has the hot hand and find them.”

Fort Recovery led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter and took a 12-point advantage (31-19) into halftime. Despite not shooting especially well from the field during the first half (2-for-16), the Flyers kept it relatively close by going 13-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Griesdorn had 18 points, including an 8-for-11 effort from the charity stripe, to lead Marion Local. Natalie Rethman scored 10 points to give the Flyers two players in double figures.

Fort Recovery led by 2 points with 2:35 to play but fell by the same margin to Marion Local, 13-11, in two quarters of action.

The Indians led 7-6 after the first quarter before holding a narrow lead late in the second.

Fort Recovery freshman Val Muhlenkamp scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds to record game highs in both. Brooke Kahlig and Olivia Patch chipped in two points apiece, and Patch hauled in five rebounds.
