Out of sixteen teams, Portland Rockets were crowned victors of the Firecracker Tournament in Fort Wayne after outscoring four opponents a combined total of 31-3.
The Rockets started off the weekend in the round of 16 with a game against the the Baker Goats. Behind pitching from Derek Thobe, the Rockets won in five innings with a score of 12-1. Cody Krumlauf had a home run and a double in the win over the Goats.
In round two Saturday, the Dan Bollenbacher pitched a two-hit night game against the Mishawaka Brewers, helping the Rockets earn a 5-1 victory. The nightcap win set the Rockets up for the semifinal Sunday morning against the Fort Wayne 45s.
Portland defeated the 45s 9-1 Sunday morning in semifinal action, with strong pitching from Zach Short.
In the tournament final, the Rockets shut out the Fort Wayne Jackers 5-0 with pitching from Garrett Scott. The Jackers only tallied four hits compared to the Rockets’ 12.
