CINCINNATI — The Rockets hit their way to the title game.
Perhaps they used all their firepower on the journey.
One game after racking up 21 hits, the Portland Rockets managed just four in a 4-3 loss Sunday to the St. John’s (Pittsburgh) Lefties in the National Amateur Baseball Federation Mini-Regional championship at Roselawn Park.
Portland, which dipped to 28-9, will have another chance at the NABF World Series as it plays in a regional tournament Thursday through Sunday at Carrington Field in Fort Wayne. The regional tournament bracket will be released in the coming days.
The Rockets, who defeated the Lefties 8-4 in the second game of pool play Saturday, fell behind in the rematch 4-0 after giving up two runs in the second inning and one run in each of the third and sixth frames.
With one swing of the bat in the top of the eighth inning, Zach Tanner put the Rockets within reach. The free-swinging slugger launched a three-run homer to score Cody Krumlauf and Dustin Lewis. Portland got the potential game-tying run on base in the top of the ninth but wasn’t able to even the score.
Garrett Scott suffered the loss. He gave up four runs on five hits over four innings. Max Habegger, who pitched a complete-game five innings in a 10-0 win Friday, tossed the final five innings in the title game. He allowed two hits and struck out seven.
After closing out pool play with the 8-4 win against the Lefties, Portland won a thriller in the semifinal against the Berea Blue Sox on Saturday afternoon. Portland gave up five runs in the fourth inning and trailed 7-2 before knotting the score with a five-run effort in the home half of the fifth. The Blue Sox nabbed a 10-9 lead after the sixth, but the Rockets scored six straight runs — including four in the seventh — to win 15-10.
Jimmy West earned the win in relief. He scattered five hits over five innings while allowing three runs. He also struck out one.
Derek Thobe got the win Saturday morning against St. John’s. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out four as he tossed all seven innings.
Offensively, Tanner led Portland over the four-game tournament by going 10-for-15 with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs.
Chris Miller was 6-for-11 with a home run and five RBIs, while Krumlaf added six hits, including a pair of doubles.
Tristen Becker totaled five hits while Dalton Tinsley and Lewis collected four hits each.
Perhaps they used all their firepower on the journey.
