Zane Shreve was awarded for his academic accomplishments in high school.
He’s earned the same honor in college.
Shreve, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team Wednesday.
The rural Redkey native was among 33 members of the Miami University track and field squad to be named academic all-MAC.
Shreve, a junior, set a career best in the decathlon during the MAC Championships May 11 through 13. He totaled 5,874 points, beating his previous best by four points.
To qualify for academic all-MAC, a student-athlete must have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests in a particular sport and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2.
Shreve is studying electrical engineering.
Lions rally to win
Portland Lions Club rallied to score five runs in the fifth inning Wednesday to beat PG-14 by a 13-12 score in Portland Junior League’s Willie Mays division.
Isaac Miller led Lions Club with a triple and a single. Zac McAbee chipped in two singles, while Timo Minnich, Wes Wenning, Isaac Scott and Austin Jellison each had hits. Minnich and Miller both had three RBIs, while Kane Camara and McAbee drove in two runs apiece.
Conner Specht hit a home run and had a single in the loss for PG-14. Maddox Huffman, Ryne Goldsworthy and Joseph Snipes each had doubles, as Tony Wood and Rhysin Blowers both hit singles. Goldsworthy and Specht tallied three RBIs apiece.
Kiwanis tops Inman
Cody Rowles and Bryce Wenk had three RBIs each as Kiwanis defeated Inman U-Loc 11-6 in Willie Mays action of Portland Junior League.
Max Klopfenstein and Rowles each had a double for Kiwanis. Gavin Young had a pair of singles, as he and Klopfenstein also drove in two runs. Wenk and Austin Curtis both had singles.
Grant Wendel smacked a double and a single with two RBIs to lead Inman. Lucas Strait hit a double and had two RBIs, as Gage Sims, Jayden Comer, Ryan Timmerman and Cohen Henry all had singles.
Trio leads Display Craft
Olivia Gillum, Chloe Oliver and Emily Young teamed up to lead Display Craft to a 15-9 victory over Trinity United Methodist Church in PJL’s Rookie softball division.
They collectively scored nine runs as they were all 4-for-4 from the plate. Makena Avery, Natalie May and Taven Bentley were each 3-for-4 and accounted for the other six runs. Brittlynn Maxwell chipped in two hits.
