DELPHOS, Ohio — The Indians had a comfortable five-run lead after three innings.
It disappeared in the fourth.
The Tribe took another lead in the sixth and put the game away one frame later.
Nick Thwaits blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, Cade Wedel went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and the Fort Recovery High School baseball team put up five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the host St. John’s Blue Jays 11-6 on Saturday.
The non-Midwest Athletic Conference tilt was the season opener for both teams.
Fort Recovery (1-0) jumped out to an early lead on Thwaits’ blast, and was 5-0 after three innings before the Blue Jays (0-1) tied the score with five runs in the fifth. The Indians grabbed a 6-5 advantage in the sixth inning, and extended the lead with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Wendel had a single and a double, Reese Rogers notched three singles and drove in two runs, and Thwaits had two hits. Ben Homan, who pitched four innings of relief to get the victory, also had two hits and an RBI.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team lost to the Blue Jays, 3-2. Drew Muhlenkamp tossed 5 1/3 scoreless inning while giving up one hit and striking out five. Josh Muhlenkamp suffered the loss in relief.
Tribe drop pair
ARCANUM, Ohio — A big inning proved too much for the Fort Recovery softball team as it dropped a pair of games to the Arcanum Trojans on Saturday.
Arcanum scored eight runs in the third inning on its way to an 18-1 five-inning victory in game one. The Trojans continued their offensive output, tallying seven runs in the opening frame of a 13-2 win in the second game, which also lasted five innings.
Devin Post, who took the loss in game one, finished the day with two hits and a walk. Emily Hart, Hannah Knapke and Olivia Homan each had hits. Taylor Thien notched the only RBI for the Tribe (0-2), which gave up 15 unearned runs in the doubleheader.
Outcalt ninth on floor
LAFAYETTE — Hannah Outcalt had her competitive gymnastics season come to a close Saturday in the “Passport to Paris” USA Gymnastics Xcel State Championship at Jefferson High School.
Outcalt, a West Jay Middle School eighth grader competing in the Senior B Xcel Gold age group, finished ninth in the on the floor exercise with her score of 9.2. She added an 8.75 on vault, 8.3 on balance beam and 8.225 on uneven bars.
