Kyle Selvey hadn’t had a plate appearance all season.
When he finally got his chance, he made the most of the opportunity.
Selvey, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, got his first hit of the season and scored twice in helping the Huntington University baseball team to the Crossroads League tournament championship Wednesday.
The junior went 1-for-2 against Goshen College in the tournament semifinal on Tuesday, as the Foresters (33-11, 22-5 CL) defeated the Maple Leafs 21-1. Top-seeded Huntington then went on to beat Marian 15-3 in the tournament final.
Selvey scored once in an 11-1 win Saturday in the tournament opener against Bethel, and added another run in a 6-5 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Monday in the quarterfinal. Both were registered as a courtesy runner.
Selvey and the Foresters earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Ended his junior year with a 12-game hitting streak as the Bethel College baseball team bowed out of the Crossroads League tournament Tuesday.
Affolder had a double and a single in a 11-1 loss to Huntington University in the tournament opener on Saturday. In the consolation bracket, he had one hit and scored once as the Pilots defeated Spring Arbor 8-2. Later that same day, he notched two hits and drove in a pair of runs as Bethel (22-22, 10-17 CL) defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene 8-0.
The junior then had two hits in a season-ending loss to Marian.
Affolder finished the season with a .352 batting average, which was good for fourth on the team. He was second in runs (32), third in doubles (10) and fifth in RBIs (26).
Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2015
Pitched for the Goshen College baseball team as it lost to Huntington University 21-1 in the Crossroads League tournament semifinal.
Ingle entered in relief and allowed five earned runs on four hits with five walks. He lasted 1 1/3 innings.
The sophomore appeared in six games for the Maple Leafs (26-31, 11-16 CL). He gave up 15 hits, allowed 10 runs — nine earned — on 15 hits. He struck out two and walked 10 while earning a 1-0 record.
Jackson Hobbs
Fort Recovery – 2016
Started but did not factor into the decision as the Edison State Community College baseball team defeated Clark State 12-9 on Saturday.
He gave up nine runs — one earned — on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Hobbs was knocked out of the game after four innings of work. The Chargers (19-20, 8-12 Ohio Community College Athletic Association) trailed 9-8 before scoring one run in the fifth inning and three in the eighth for the victory.
Edison State qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII Division II sub-district tournament on Friday against Lakeland Community College.
Zane Shreve
Jay County – 2014
Competed for the Miami University men’s track team as it competed in the Indiana State University Twilight on Saturday.
The junior’s best finish came in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran to a time of 16.05 seconds, which was good enough for seventh place. He was also eighth in discus with a distance of 31.8 meters, and placed ninth in javelin at 41.08 meters.
Shreve and the RedHawks open the Mid-American Conference Championships today and it continues through Saturday.
Drew LeFever
South Adams – 2016
Earned a top-five finish for Taylor University men’s track and field team as it hosted the Crossroads League Championship on Saturday.
He placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 48 feet, 6 inches. The freshman also had a throw of 123 feet, 4 inches, to place eighth in discus. LeFever was also 14th in the hammer throw at 126 feet, 1 inch.
LeFever and the Trojans placed fourth with 109.33 points. Marian won the team title with 182 points.
Abigail Johnson
Jay County – 2014
Also competed in the Crossroads League Championship for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s track team on Saturday at Taylor University.
Johnson was eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13 minutes, 4.79 seconds.
The IWU Wildcats totaled 176.5 points to finish second to Marian, which scored 181 points.
Sydney Robbins
Jay County – 2016
Scored for the University of Saint Francis women’s track team as it finished eighth in the Crossroads League Championship on Saturday.
The freshman placed eighth in javelin with a distance of 100 feet (30.47 meters). She advanced to the finals but was not able to improve on her first throw of the day.
Robbins scored one point for the Cougars, who totaled 22 points.
