BERNE — The Starfires’ winning streak came to an abrupt end.

South Adams High School’s softball team had its 16-game winning streak come to a halt on Thursday with a 2-0 loss to county rival Adams Central Jets.

Adams Central (10-6, 4-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored once in each of the first two innings. The Jets had a two-run single in the first inning, and plated an unearned run on an error one inning later.

The Starfires (16-1, 4-1 ACAC), who are the top-ranked team in Class 2A, had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the second but weren’t able to break through.

Katelin Augsburger suffered the loss. She gave up two runs — one earned — on four hits. She walked one and struck out four.



Third sinks Stars

MONROE — The South Adams baseball team gave up six runs in the third inning Thursday in a 6-2 loss to the host Adams Central Jets.

Adams Central nabbed a 2-0 lead on a two-run single, and pushed the advantage to 3-0 with an RBI groundout. One batter later, an error pushed the score to 4-0, and a two-run single made it 6-0 Adams Central.

South Adams responded with a two-run single by Joe Stuber in the top of the fourth.

Grant Besser, Nic Stuber, Collin Shaffer and Mark Clary all drew walks, as the Starfires struck out 15 times.



Three set records

VERSAILLES, Ohio — Three Indians combined to break four records for the Fort Recovery Middle School track team in the Midwest Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday.

The Tribe boys finished second with 94.16 points, behind Minster (142.83) and ahead of Marion Local (80).

New Bremen won the girls title with 127.5 points. Minster was second at 122, and Marion Local placed third with 79.5. Fort Recovery totaled 57 points for fifth place.

Kierra Wendel set records in the 200- and 400-meter dash events. She won the former with a time of 27.34 seconds, breaking Julie Grisez’s old mark by 0.16 seconds. In the 400 dash, she lowered her own record with a time of 1 minute, 0.93 seconds.

Elena Evers placed first in discus with a new record of 94 feet, beating Holly Stein’s mark of 92 feet, 2 inches. Evers was also first in shot put at 35 feet, 4.75 inches.

Owen Moorman broke his own record yet again in the 200 dash with a time of 24.37 seconds. He was also first in the 100 dash (12.04 seconds) and 400 dash (57.3 seconds).

Also earning victories for the FRMS boys were Derek Jutte (110 hurdles – 17.71 seconds) and Regan Martin (high jump – 5 feet, 6 inches).



Jay Lodge wins

Jay Lodge 87 earned an 18-5 victory over Redkey Purple on Wednesday in Major softball action of Portland Junior League.

Emma Swingley, Grace Brewster, Drew Dressel, Madison Curtis and Maggie Maitlen all had hits for Jay Lodge.

Abbie Fields, Grace Shimp and Laila Waddell collected hits for Redkey.



Pak-A-Sak wins big

Pak-A-Sak earned a lopsided win on Thursday, defeating Pioneer Packaging 25-6 in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball division.

Alex Miller led Pak-A-Sak with five hits. Cooper Reynolds, Caleb Sibray, Braden O’Brien, Eli Stockton, Freddie Lingo, Kaden Carpenter and Aryon Montes all had four hits.

Jaxson Huntsman led Pioneer with three hits. Dillon Jellison, Bentley Comer, Samuel Wiggins and Xavier Maxwell had two hits apiece.



Kiwanis blanks Inman

Kiwanis moved to 3-0 Wednesday with a 16-0 victory over Inman U-Loc in PJL’s Willie Mays division.

Gavin Young led Kiwanis with three singles. Jasper Hartzel had a pair of doubles, while Cody Rowles added a pair of singles. Sylas Wenk notched a triple and a single with three RBIs.

Lucas Strait had a double and a single for Inman, while Jayden Comer recorded a double.
