FORT RECOVERY — With the tournament already in full swing, the Indians wrapped up the regular season Saturday.

Fort Recovery High School’s baseball team closed the regular season with an 8-2 home loss to the Fort Loramie Redskins.

Junior Reese Rogers hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Cade Wendel and Nick Thwaits to give Fort Recovery (13-10) a 2-1 advantage.

The Redskins scored three runs in the second inning to go on top 4-2, and pushed the advantage to 5-1 one inning later. In the same frame, Fort Recovery had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs but couldn’t bring them home.

Fort Loramie added two insurance runs in the sixth inning and tacked on one more in the seventh.

Thwaits led the Indians with a double and two singles. Kody Shinabery and Ethan Schoen also notched singles for the Tribe.

Rogers suffered the loss. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out one in four innings of work.

Fort Recovery resumes tournament play at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Midwest Athletic Conference rival Parkway in the Division IV district semifinal Coldwater.



Stars, Panthers split

MARION — The South Adams softball team split a doubleheader with the host Eastbrook Panthers on Saturday.

Eastbrook scored all of its runs in the sixth inning to win game one, 4-0. The Class 2A No. 1 Starfires (18-2) scored twice in the top of the first inning of game two and held on for a 2-1 victory.

Isabella Ramirez drew a leadoff walk in the second game, and took third after a single from Morgan Alberson. Tori Raugh put down a sacrifice bunt to score Ramirez, and Taylor Augsburger followed with an RBI single to give the Starfires a 2-0 advantage.

Eastbrook cut the deficit in half with a run the next inning, but wasn’t able to tie the score.

Casi Evans had the only hit for South Adams in the game one loss. Kayla LeFever and Emilie Hammel each added hits in the second game.

Anna Nussbaum recorded the victory. She allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts. Katelin Augsburger took the loss pitching in the first game. She allowed four earned runs on six hits. She struck out 13 and walked two.



SA baseball 1-1

FAIRMOUNT — South Adams’ baseball team bounced back from a loss earlier in the day to go 1-1 in the Madison-Grant Invitational on Saturday.

The Starfires (9-10) held off a late rally by the host Argylls in the second game for an 11-9 victory after a 7-4 loss to the Frankton Eagles in game one.

South Adams trailed Madison-Grant 6-2 heading into the home half of the third inning, but pushed across four runs to tie the score. Both teams added a run in the fourth inning, and a three-run sixth helped SAHS jump out front 11-7. The Argylls cut the deficit in half with two in the top of the seventh but couldn’t muster much else.

Collin Shaffer led the Starfires with a double and two singles on the day. He also had two RBIs. Grant Besser notched a pair of singles and three RBIs, while Marcus Teeter also had two hits to go with his three RBIs. Jayden Dull ripped a triple against Madison-Grant.

Braxton Haight got the win in relief. He allowed one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Shaffer got the final out to earn the save.

Besser took the loss in the first game. He surrendered five runs — four earned — on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk.



Martin sets record

LANCASTER, Ohio — Regan Martin set a new school record Saturday in the inaugural OHSAA Seventh and Eighth Grade Track and Field State Championships at Lancaster High School.

On his third attempt, the Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grader cleared 5 feet, 9 inches, to set a new school mark. He beat Aaron Vagedes’ record by one inch.

Martin finished fifth.

Austintown’s Nathan Leskovac cleared cleared 5 feet, 11 inches, to win the state championship.

Kierra Wendel represented the FRMS girls. She was eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 2.47 seconds.
