SELMA — The Starfires got shut out Tuesday in a 3-0 loss to Bellmont.

They rebounded with a win against a potential regional opponent.

South Adams High School’s softball team held off a late rally to beat the host Wapahani Raiders on Wednesday, 9-6.

The Class 2A No. 3 Starfires (19-3) had a 9-3 lead in the seventh inning thanks to a three-run second and a four-run fourth. In its final at bat, Wapahani pushed across three runs to cut the deficit in half, but wasn’t able to complete the comeback against one of the top teams in the state.

Tori Raugh and Katelin Augsburger had three hits apiece to lead South Adams. Raugh had a double and two singles while notching a team-high three RBIs. Augsburger and Shania Neal drove in two runs apiece.

Lexi Dellinger ripped a double while Isabella Ramirez, Taylor Augsburger and Neal all had singles.

Anna Nussbaum got the win pitching. She allowed six runs — four earned — on 12 hits and struck out three.

 

Stars romp Raiders

PONETO — South Adams’ baseball team completed its conference schedule Wednesday with a 14-4 victory in five innings over the host Southern Wells Raiders.

The Starfires (10-11, 3-3 Allen County Athletic Conference) struck for 10 runs in the second inning for an early 11-0 advantage. The Raiders got two back in the home half of the third, and scored two more one inning later. South Adams tacked on three runs in the fifth inning for the lopsided victory.

Corbin Blomeke smashed a home run and a double on his way to three hits and a game-high five RBIs. Jayden Dull tallied two doubles and a single while driving in four runs. Grant Besser added three hits and three RBIs. Braxton Haight had a pair of singles and two RBIs, while Joe Stuber, Marcus Teeter and Collin Shaffer had one hit each.

Shaffer got the victory. He allowed two earned runs on five hits, struck out three and walked three in three innings.



No. 2 doubles advances

OSSIAN — South Adams’ No. 1 doubles team advanced to regional Wednesday as the Starfire girls tennis team lost to the host Norwell Knights 3-2 in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Wednesday.

Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau teamed to beat Madison Oaks and Kaitlynn Griggs 6-2, 6-0. They move to 17-3 on the year and will play in the Carroll regional Tuesday or Wednesday.

No. 3 singles player Hannah Dull earned the only other victory for the Starfires, beating Cierra Middleton 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

At No. 1 singles, Virginia Lagos lost to Breann Barger 6-0, 6-0, and Haley Gerber lost to Molly Burton 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Sydney Pierce and Breanna Potts fell to Sadie Mann and Abby Hoover 6-1, 6-3.



Trinity tops Optimist

Trinity United Methodist Church topped Portland Optimist in Portland Junior League’s Rookie softball action on Wednesday.

Kayleigh Stevenson had four hits and scored three runs. Aleiah Canterbury, Erin Aker and Payton Wendel each contributed four hits and and two runs, while Kaylynn Clark and Julaya Eldeeb both had three hits and scored once.

Carley Trinidad and Karlee Baxter had three hits apiece. Raylin Hummer, Bristol Brewster, Mackenzie Curtis, Caylin Aker and Nevaeh Pettey all tallied two hits.



Lions Club wins

Portland Lions Club picked up a 15-10 victory on Wednesday over Inman U-Loc in PJL’s Willie Mays division.

Zac McAbee hit for the cycle to lead Lions Club. Isaac Miller had a double, while Timo Minnich, Wes Wenning and Isaac Scott all had singles.

Cayden Buckland had a pair of doubles to lead Inman. Lucas Strait and Gage Sims both hit triples, as Ryan Timmerman and Cohen Henry each smacked doubles.
