RICHMOND — The Jay County High School baseball team had its 12-game winning streak end with a pair of losses Saturday in the Richmond Invitational.

Jay County (15-5) closed its regular season with a 6-2 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs and a 4-1 defeat to the Seymour Fighting Owls.

New Haven scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second to lead 5-0. The Patriots got one back in the home half of the second, and had trouble cutting into the deficit until each team scored in the seventh inning.

Jay County scored in the top of the second to tie the score at 1-1 against Seymour. The Fighting Owls nabbed the lead with a run in the third inning and scored twice in the sixth.

Ryan Schlechty ripped four hits on the day to lead the Patriot offense. Cole Stigleman, Max Moser and Peyton Heniser each had two hits, with Schlechty and Heniser notching the only two RBIs.

Jake Myers shouldered the loss against New Haven, while Hare suffered the defeat against Seymour.

Jay County opens postseason play at 7 p.m. Friday in the sectional tournament against the host Yorktown Tigers.



Stars close with win

BERNE — South Adams’ softball team closed its regular season with a 7-0 victory over the Wabash Apaches on Saturday.

The Class 2A No. 3 Starfires (20-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning before pushing the score to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third. One inning later, South Adams added four insurance runs, all the while holding the Apaches scoreless.

Isabella Ramirez was a home run shy of the cycle, racking up three hits while driving in a run to lead the Starfires. She also walked once and scored three times. Morgan Alberson had a triple and two RBIs. Katelin Augsburger and Casi Evans also had singles.

Anna Nussbaum got the win pitching for the Starfires. She struck out five, walked two and scattered four hits in six innings.

South Adams opens sectional play at 5 p.m. Thursday against host Adams Central.

SA falls in finale

BERNE — The South Adams baseball team lost Saturday, 3-1 to the Northeastern Knights.

It was the first game of the Starfire Invitational, the remainder of which was canceled because of weather.

The Knights scored twice in the top of the second inning and added another run in the fifth. South Adams (11-12) scored its only run in the home half of the fifth inning.

Grant Besser had a double for the Starfires, who had a single from Nic Stuber, Corbin Blomeke and Collin Shaffer.

Marcus Teeter, Gilbert Lynch and Blomeke all had walks.

Shaffer took the loss. He allowed three runs — one earned — on three hits while striking out three and walking four in seven innings.

South Adams plays in a make up game at 5 p.m. tonight at home against Fort Wayne Concordia. The Starfires opens sectional play at 5 p.m. Thursday against Bluffton at Fort Wayne Canterbury.



Sanders leads Jay

MUNCIE — Jay County’s middle school golf team had its season come to a close as it placed seventh Saturday in the Junior High Golf Tournament at Trailside Golf Course.

RJ Baskett was the team champion with a score of 149. Jay County totaled 186.

Kyle Sanders led Jay County with a score of 38 to place eighth overall. Griffin Mann was second on the team with 47, while Aidan Garlinger was behind him in third with 49. Abby Huey completed the team score with 52.

Ryleigh Oswalt also competed and finished with 54.
